Liver (the kind you eat lol)

Yeah, try doing a search for this on OH and you'll likely get very few results for the kind of liver you'd want to eat :)

So.  Pre-op I was a HUGE fan of liver (fried, sauteed, broiled).  So post-op I want to try some.  At what point can I have some and what are the benefits?

When you're on solids.  If you can eat beef or chicken, you are probably ready to try liver.

Benefits?  High protein, very concentrated in vitamins/nutrients, source of heme iron.

I'm at 6 weeks post op so I pretty much figured the consistency was right around where I wanna be.  Just wanted to make sure :)

Okay, so first of all let me say I'm pre-op so I'm going by what I know about nutrition and what I've read about the DS only.

Second - yuck.  :)

Third, liver is very low carb with an average serving having about 20gm of protein, 5 gm of iron, and is high in vitamin A, cholesterol and has minerals such as zinc.  That's in beef/calves liver.  If you're talking chicken liver (double yuck), I'm not sure.  My husband is a liver fiend so I looked it up to talk him out of eating it thinking it would be bad for him.  I was wrong.  He only eats it rarely but it makes me seriously gag.  Even the smell of it cooking - blech.  But, it seems pretty good for you.

Never Yuk LoL except for the chicken liver.  I agree, thats gross.

You're husband is awesome :)  

Theres a little market in a flea market (Columbus Mart) near me and they have the BEST fried liver and turkey butt around! 

Now for how to cook it.  If it is that beneficial I want to make sure I don't make it too greasy so it doesnt slip right through me :)

Hrrrmmm...

I think that some liver patés would qualify as soft or mushy foods, the problem is that they go great with toast points and crackers... I think D'artangian and les trois petits cochons make some great patés, I've seen a lot of supermarkets carry them.

I bet it would be awesome on some pork rinds.  They're my new go to when I want something to dip.  I even tried them with some tuna.  YUM!

Try pate with crisp apple or pear slices or, best, by itself. If you cook liver and onions, make certain to caramelize the onions or thoughly cook them. Raw and slightly cooked onions can wreak havoc on the new digestive system.

OMG OMG OMG 

You are a genius,   the apple and pear slices are a great idea. Liver goes really nicely with something a teeny bit sweet and acidic.

Love liver - great source of protein. But I will warn you about the suggestion of apple or pear slices. I am almost 9 years post-op and eating raw apples completely tears my stomach up. I can barely eat half an apple and then it must be peeled. My system can't seem to break down the apple (peel in particular). So just a suggestion here.

If you do try some pate (or chopped liver - yum), just put it some a few saltine crackers.
