Just to update the situation. As you know my old policy did not cover any WLS, let alone the DS. Now, our new plan (a Kaiser plan) does not cover it as well.
With my suspicion confirmed - I now have to decide how to go about the self-pay method at this point and whether I'm willing to consider the VSG in attempt to save money and have a "safer" surgery (statistically less postop complications). But at a BMI of 55 with ~200lbs to lose it seems that the DS is the logical answer.
