I echo the reports from Dr Antone's patients, painless, and the j tube he send you home with makes a world of difference for eating and hydration post op, no issue there either,  kept mine for 8  weeks.   my previous lap surgery was a nightmare.

Hi,

I had Dr Crookes for my surgeon.  He is an awesome man.  I am almost five years out, and everytime I go back. he know exactly who you are like you were in there yesterday.

I had my surgery open, and it was less than 2 hrs.  I was in pain in the hospital, more than I thought, but not unbearable.  I stayed in the hospital for five days, and I needed all five.  Once home I was able to sleep in my bed right away and didn't need to be propped up or anything.  I went to work after a week.  I just sit down for a couple of  hours a day.

The scar is not bad.  Mine is less than 6 inches long.

Good luck, you are in awesome hands.

There are a couple more on here.  I was scared too.  I am a mother of 2 and it was a hard decision.  But nothing compared to the fact that I lost 93 pounds.  I was a slow and steady loser.  I lost about 10 pounds a month, but I have managed to keep it off.  I had a regain of about 10 pounds, and I have just recently lost the 10 plus five more.  I would like to lose another 10, the 10 that I never lost in the beginning,  Just goes to show that it still works.

I have not had any issues thank goodness.  If ever there is a question that needs answering, he will answer.  Just be prepared with all the questions, and he will answer them for you.  You will be glad you made the decision.  GL

I had my first WLS open. I was on a morphine pump, I had no pain in the hospital. I had actually forgotten that they had cut me (so much so that when the nurse came to clean it and I saw it the first time, I nearly passed out). It can be a little shocking. I had to sleep in a recliner for 2 weeks as I could not sleep on belly or sides. I was sent home with morphine pills and I realized after my second surgery that it was the pain meds that were part of the problem, it kept me awake and jittery and out of it. If you can get it - dilaudid rocks!! I was lucky - no icisional infections but I did end up with an incisional hernia which was fixed a year later.

My DS was open, and it was the very first surgery I'd ever had. I was mentally prepared for the pain to be TERRIBLE.

It wasn't.

In fact, it was no more painful than the lap hernia repair I had done about 18 months later---although I probably DID develop the hernia due to having had the open DS. This doesn't mean that YOU'LL develop a hernia from having an open procedure---I had a VERY large, heavy panni at the time of my DS, so there was a LOT of strain on the incision.

I had Open DS in March... a little history, I have had my appendix removed (7years old), 3 c-sections and my gal bladder, plus kidney stones all prior to my DS surgery out of those 6 events I would rank it somewhere in the middle, kidney stones, gal bladder(the pain not the surgery) and my 3rd c-section all go first, then DS, then my other 2 Csections and my appendix after this... Recovery was more focused on eating/drinking then the pain. I had a post operative ilius which is basically where the small intestine is "asleep"/in shock following the surgery and I guess that's semi-common w/open DS... all in all I had a wonderful experience, my surgeon was/is awesome, he's the co-chief of surgery a general surgeon at our military hospital, he's been doing WLS for over 20 years and DS for at least 8...
