My DS doctor prefers to perform open DS surgery because according to him, that is how he was trained by Dr. Hess and he has more room to work. I had my DS Dec 28 2009 and was text book on recovery, however at eight months out I had an incisional hernia that was causing me pain and interefering with my ability to eat so I had hernia repair by the same DS surgeon. Again, my recovery was text book. As for pain, my doc was very much a 'knock the pain out' type of surgeon and you should discuss your pain management with your own DS surgeon to see what their thoughts are on the subject.

had no problems and my surgeon was wonderful.  The only problem I had which was not the result of the open Ds was the swelling I had which caused my BP to go out of sight.  Everything else was okay.  In fact, I do not even remember being on morphine even though they say I was.  It was sucha breeze compared to my hysterectomy and the incision was healed in no time and I was an out of control diabetic.  Best wishes on your journey.  I would not be so worried about the operation if your doctor has performed them routinely.
