You can utilize the same pill (It has to be Prometrium, it's the only one in oil) vaginally. Seems gross, but they just insert the pill into the vaginal canal. It's off label but it is done all the time. It will absorb locally to help the endometrial lining. Also there are vaginal creams but those are of label too. (Prochieve and Crinone). However, given your cir****tances they might be more willing to do an off label use.

The injectible is not progesterone, it is PROGESTIN. It is a synthetic form of progesterone and is linked to osteoporosis and has a bad side effect profile. I would avoid that if at all possible. Unfortunately, Prometrium is the only available form of pharmaceutical grade, prescription dose progesterone.

Best of luck to you. While you never want surgery if you don't have to have it, I don't regret my hysterectomy one minute. I haven't had a period in 8 years - yee haw!

PS to the other poster, if you are taking progesterone, take it at night before bed. It helps with the dizziness.

Sunday,
Adenomyosis is what I had and the ablation will NOT fix it. Yes what happens is uterus continues to grow and the mass enlarges as it grows within the uterine tissues,  etc and causes more problems later on. By the time I had my hysterectomy ( I was being stubborn about it) they removed the uterus and a mass which were about the size of a large cantelope. The GYN surgeon at the time said it was the largest one she had ever removed.

Also if you have any bladder leakage, have them hang up the bladder while they are in there ! Or at least have them check on it while in the neighborhood.

The ablation might slow it but it will not stop it from growing, it has a dang mind of it's own. I was not bleeding as heavy as you are now and I tried to delay. Knowing what I know now, I would go ahead and just get rid of things and get on with healing and feeling better.

I know it is frustrating, but you will feel so much better once you stop bleeding, get your counts back up.

I also had horrid cramps before my hysterectomy as well. Love not having a period !

Feel better !

Ah, that's a whole other ball of wax. I'm really sorry, but all the stuff I ever read about that is that hystie is the way to go. There is, I believe, a procedure that falls short of a total hysterectomy, but I don't know if that would be indicated or how effective it might be. I remember reading women's stories of having this done on Hystersisters, though. It looks like a bugger of a surgery :-/.

I had the Novasure endometrial ablation in early June and have had no periods since then. It was a relatively painless procedure done in the hospital under general anesthesia. I was off of work for the day and back the next with no problems.

There is a suppository form of progesterone as well.
That might work better.

THANK HEAVENS YOU WENT TO THE ER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yikes!

Yes, please do ream the doctor out. Medical deities **** me off no end.

I read a bunch of stuff about endometrial ablation when I was looking at the bleeding issues some years ago, and the reports were very mixed. I had no such choice about my hystie (though I had big time bleeding going on, which is why that stuff got my attention), because there was a high suspicion of ovarian cancer. I was glad to get rid of the whole shooting match.

If this is about stopping the bleeding, though, without other urgent worries like that, might a second opinion be in order? If you feel very strongly about not going the route of the whole hystie, there are other steps along the way, like the ablation and hystie without oophorectomy (keep the ovaries).

There is a fabulous website that might be helpful in these scary times, www.hystersisters.com . It was a lifeline for me.

I think they are hysterectomy happy if you ask me. They just want to take it out. Every time I hear about someone having a problem their Dr. wants to take out the uterus. Sometimes this is good, but not every time. I think it's just lazy and they get the most money for it. My OB wanted to do the same damn thing. Just lazy.

I have the same problem as you do and I just had an implant put in my arm called implanon. It lasts for three years and it's only progesterone. It releases directly into your body. You don't need to worry about digesting it. I've had bleeding problems for 9 years and I've had heavy hemorrhaging periods last for months. I still have my uterus and I'm not bleeding at all.

If they are talking about giving you a depo shot, that has been proven to make you gain weight and I'd think twice.

Ablations are also a good alternative. My friend has had one and is very happy. I would try that before a hysterectomy for sure. Keep your lady parts as long as you can.

This is of course my opinion and I'm no medical professional. I would seriously look into hysterectomies because there are other complications that come with them after the fact. Try other methods and use it only as the VERY last resort.

My two cents.

Whew! Thank goodness you are safely in the hospital.

It seems the majority of the most knowlegable posters think hysterectomy is the way to go, but I have no experience with that.

I'm just glad you made it to the hospital! Please keep us informed.
