Wow, Julie, you look positively radiant in that photo! Congratulations on the successes you've celebrated as your five-year surgiversary approaches. You've been an incredible inspiration to me as a pre-op. I started my weight loss journey at 282 pounds too when I had my RNY...but have had some regain since then...one of the reasons I'm seeking the DS. To see how well you're rocking your DS gives me hope that mine will work too! Thanks again for sharing the highlights of your journey! Get out and celebrate this momentous occasion as you have certainly earned it!
Warmest wishes,
Lisa

Thank you Lisa - I am going to celebrate in style tonight, by going to my favorite little local Italian restaurant and ordering a big order of their homemade fried calamari. It's the BEST. How lucky I am to be able to enjoy foods such as that.
Don't worry - you'll rock your DS too, and your time is just around the corner.

Hi Julie,
Your post just made me think of a question I have. I noted you were going to have fried calamari. Have you had any troubles with battered type meats like that? One thing I love is beer battered perch or walleye. We have a tradition of going out for Friday night fish frys here in Wisconsin. I can get lots of protein in that way, and right now the batter doesn't bother me. But I was wondering if that would be a big no no post DS surgery. I realize it may be several months before I'll be able to eat "normal" foods. But I wondered if batter fried anything was problematic. I've had fried calamari before and it's delicious! Glad to hear it doesn't give you any problems. Do any other types of fried foods do that for you....like the coating on chicken or fish? What about eating the skin on something, like chicken? Does that cause problems?
Warmest wishes,
Lisa

Hi Lisa - I am a fish fry kinda gal - you Wisconsin folks and us Michigan folks certainly have that in common! I will only occasionally suffer ill effects from deep fried, battered foods, and I've been eating fried fish from about six months post-op on. For some reason, many battered shrimps can give me some grief, especially the pre-made stuff. My husband orders this pre-breaded shrimp from Cisco that I cannot eat, but if he hand breads it, I have no problems. The calamari I get at my local Italian joint is only very lightly dusted, so it's good. Some fried chicken gives me gas, some doesn't. I do fine with KFC. Fish sticks and pre-frozen stuff give me problems. So, I think the issue is, the more heavily processed, the worse the gas.
One thing I do notice, is if I go to a good fish fry, I better be prepared to spend some extra time on the toilet the next morning! No biggie, but I do need to work that into my schedule accordingly, LOL. Since I usually go to fish fries during lent, that means it all happens on a Saturday morning, LOL.
