I am a newbie, and reading, reading, reading, but I'm not coming up with the explanation of why swing critters for luck

?

Anybody want to take a moment and explain how that came about?

It came about because we all don't share the same religious beliefs and some people don't believe in any kind of higher power. Some people will send prayers for you, others might just wish you well or send positive vibes and others might swing chickens or critters. It originated with the Jews. So, it's just another way someone might wish you well without actually praying for you.
