1 Year Update w Pics
Well hello everyone. A year has passed already. This has been one amazing journey, and like a lot of others have said I wish I had the DS years earlier. I missed out on so much during those morbidly obese years. And I know the DS has offered me the best, most normal lifestyle of any of the other surgeries.
The first few months were a little rough with nausea and figuring out the eating deal. Now I graze all day long, never going more than a couple of hours without food. There was some trial and error, but it really came down to carbs and sugar. Less of those and all is fine. At one point recently I was battling a sugar addiction, especially chocolate and a pack a day of fruity Mentos, but that seems to have waned and more pounds are melting off. I can tolerate most foods, but do have a short list of foods that cause intestinal distress (potatoes, rice, breads, popcorn, pasta).
Surgeons always say this is not a magic bullet, but it's the closest I have come to one in all of my years of weight loss efforts. I've dropped 126 pounds with very little effort, and only 27 more pounds to goal. The only exercising has been fun activities like amusement parks and go-carting. At Six Flags I got a seasons pass, and on opening weekend went Saturday and Sunday and rode one roller coaster after another for two days straight.
One of my favorite wows is when I went in for my first post-op pedicure in the spring and was shocked that I could reach down and pull the tissue from between my toes! I used to always asked one of the nail techs to do it. I felt a little embarrassed for all the years I thought it was normal to not be able to reach my own toes. One other wow is that periodically I have to adjust the car mirrors because I sit lower and lower in the seat. That's gives me a litlle thrill everytime.
Vitamins are super easy to take and easy to remember - all 27 of them. I am so glad I had this surgery and thanks to everyone for your support throughout this journey. Love the DS!
