So who wouldn't be ideal candidates for the DS?

Since I've only thought of this from my perspective, I'm trying to expand my knowledge about which people wouldnt be ideal candidates for the DS. I see a lot of people passing on the DS for an RNY, but some don't really state why. I was wondering what legitamate reasons someone would have for not wanting the DS. So far the only ones I could think of were:

1) Vegans who want to stay that way
2) People who know they won't be diciplined enough for the vites/protein compliance
3) IBS and Crohns
4) Severe GERD

Are there any other reasons leaning towards medical that I've left out? Note that I'm leaving out "sheeple" because I'm cusious about reasons that aren't so much based on personality.

Thanks!

Further to your second point - you have to be able to afford vitamins. Also you need to be able to be your own educated advocate as even many doctors/surgeons don't know about the DS.

Yeah the vites can get pricey, I hadn't thought of that, and it's a very good reason to add to the list.

Thanks!

Vites are only a fraction of the cost.  There are iron infusions for many people,  lifelong.  There are specialists consults - hematologists,  endocrinologists,  there are bone density scans,  labwork more frequent than normal and more extensive.....good health insurance for the rest of  your life is critical too.  And the DS diet is expensive - eating lots of protein and low carbs is expensive.  And there may be prescriptions that are not covered by insurance (if you even have decent insurance), etc etc

People unwilling to educate themselves about vites and their new innards, and spineless jellyfish type people should not even apply....just sayin'....

I don't believe the affording vites thing.  I am the cheapest person ever and still have my vites.
Heck of a lot cheaper than the medicines I was on before too...  Now the forgetting the vites, I am a victim to.   But tomorrow is another day...

Where do Vegans get their protein?  They could just up it from that source or do shakes.

And what is up with GERD?  I helped mine.

The only legitimate reason I can see is ignorance.  I did not know the DS existed when I chose my lapband.  But, at that time I wouldn't have been ready for it as I thought I could do it without the intestinal part.   Hindsight is 20/20 though.

I think what was meant about being if someone can't afford any vitamins at all. It's something to think about if money is that tight.

As for Vegan, it' s not fun living on shakes. I'm sure it can be done, I'm not saying it can't.

Glad your GERD got better for you! But it seems unpredictable whether or not the DS improves it or makes it worse in some individuals- I've read some comments on the forums where some people say it was better, some worse, meanwhile some who never had GERD before got it post op. If anyone can point me to some stats that would be great :) I'm not sure if there's any studies out about it.

I tried helping the "I'm wearing diapers and don't know what type surgery I had" person.  She claimed she could not afford Calcium much less the rest of the vites she needed.

I never got her to the point of buying the vites she needed because she was such a self-sabotager (sp?) that she "forgot" to take the lab list to her pcp when she finally got around to going to get her labs.  That was the point I told her I could no longer try to help her.

The DS is not for attention-seekers who are basically suicidal.

Some people will need omeprazole or something similar the rest of their lives for GERD.  My GERD did not go away with the DS - in fact it got worse.  I will be on omeprazole for the rest of my life.  And that costs money.

Another issue is that a lot of meds people may have been on when obese might have been covered by insurance.  Most vites are not.

A total vegan would have a lot of trouble getting in enough protein.  The protein sources that vegan's use would cause most DSer's a LOT of discomfort. Vegan's do not use whey protein.  Can you imagine trying to eat enough legumes and tofu? UGH!

The vites are almost as much and sometimes more for RNYer's.

Both my IBS and GERD improved with the DS, so that may be a crapshoot.

People who won't do their due diligence or are ummm, slow to learn or can't / won't advocate for themselves should most definitely pass.
