Hello Everyone:)

Im almost ready to submit my revision to DS to my insurance but in the mean time I was hoping one of the labwork gurus could check out my labs (link above) and give me input.

My Vit D is already in the toilet at 16!!! so im currently taking 10K twice a day. Calcium could come up more so im taking 630mg Calcium Citrate + D twice a day. Should i add a night time dose of Vit D and Calcium??

My Copper was high and my Zinc was on the low side so im taking 50mg of Zinc twice a day to try to bring the Copper down and Zinc up.

B1 and B12 could come up so im taking 100mg of B1 and 2000 mcg of B12 daily.

Plus, of course, im taking a multi daily.

My main question is that my Iron looks pretty good but my Ferritin is low so does that mean i need to supplement with more iron??

The earliest my surgery can be is October due to scheduling on my side so hopefully that will be enough time to pull my Vit D up!!!

Thanks so much, I really appreciate all the help:) jen

~Jennifer

I think you've got a pretty good plan to get your levels up. I can't access your spreadsheet but if your ferritin is low, you probably should supplement with some iron. You might want to check out Bifera at Walgreen's or order some Proferrin. I get mine along with everything else from Vitalaldy.

I think Kayla caught some good stuff I missed. You might want to add a little more in the way of protein shakes. You want your albumin in the 4s and protein pre-op is a good idea anyway. I think you're doing great to be on top of this stuff now.

Thanks again! i will definitely add a protein shake:) I also have been logging all my foods and found that i wasnt eating a lot of protein (the band makes it almost impossible) so ive add fage, eggs and more cheese to my diet so hopefully that will help too!!!

You have your spreadsheet set to private...

Calcium in the blood does not really respond to extra calcium supplementation.  Calcium is critical for bodily processes, including nerve transmission and muscle contraction, so we need to keep the level stable at all times.  Thats why we have a big ol stockpile of it to pull from (bones!!).  Not that additional calcium is a bad idea, especially if just to get used to taking vitamins, but don't be surprised if the labs don't show anything.  We monitor calcium status through vitamin D, PTH, alkaline phosphatase, osteocalcin, DEXA scans, etc etc.

I don't think you need that much zinc.  RDA for normies is I think, 30mg, so 50mg should be totally adequate.  Taking too much zinc will interfere with other minerals and you could end up anemic.

I wouldn't say supplementing iron would be a bad idea.

I doubt you need that much B-12...but it probably won't hurt you.  I can't see your spreadsheet so I don't know if you had other B levels taken (or if they are even really low), but if one or two Bs are low, others probably are.  They often work together, which is why a B-complex might be better than supplementing individually.

Overall, I think you are forgetting that your guts are not altered yet and you could be oversupplementing.

Opps! sorry to have wasted your time. My spreadsheet is now set to view with a link so hopefully that works.

My B1 and B12 were on the low side B1 18 Range 9-44, B12 312 Range 200-1100 (vitalady says over 1000) but my B6 was high at 31 Range 2.1-21.7 so im not sure i could supplement with a B complex.

I will reduce my Zinc to once a day. The weird thing is my Copper was 207 with a Range of 70-175???

Ive just started my Vitamins on Saturday so im sure no damage has been done yet:)

Thank you so much for taking your time! jen

Absolutely no worries at all--not a waste of time at all :)

Now that I can see that your B6 is high, I do agree that supplementing the B-12 and thiamine separately is likely the best ;)

Yeah, the b-12 is pretty low.  Keep on with the 2mg pills, they won't hurt you.

Zinc and copper share a carrier protein and compete for absorption so they are kinda yin/yang.  Bringing up the zinc a tad should put you in good range for both.  But I still bet that 1 a day would probably be fine.  I just worried since your surgery is so far away...supplementing highly with zinc over that long period of time could be unfavorable for you.

The ferritin isn't that bad.  I know with the recommended vitalady range of 200+, it makes 50 sound totally sucky, but it's not too bad (10 is bad.  or 20.).  Over 100 would be more ideal, and sure, of course, 200 would be awesome.  I'd use the time before surgery to boost while you have a full duodenum to absorb the iron.  What you want to do really depends.  I just wouldn't recommend ferrous sulfate.  I bet proferrin would work pretty well for you, but it's kinda pricey.  You could definitely do carbonyl iron (tender iron, or vitron C)

your spreadsheet looks pretty nice   I love google docs.

My vit d was is also bad  as a pre-op (23).  I am taking 50k A DAY as per what was recommended..I only have a month or a month and a half til surgery and needed to get it up ASAP!!

I bought them here:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A0F2B2

if you register with amazon with a .edu email, you will get Amazon Prime for a year (for free!)..amazon prime gives you free 2 day shipping so it ends up being cheaper than vitalady for that particular product!
