It WAS mentioned to you... Did you forget about this post?

This was also the only post you made on OH prior to your surgery. The rest were all after the fact. This is all trumped by the fact that you spent a year on OH, trying to get approval as you mentioned. In that year I would hope you had been reading and researching here. There is no shortage of posts every single day about surgeons, dsfacts.com, post op issues, doing your own research, advocating for yourself, ect...
As for protein options- order samples from Vitalady.com. This is talked about here often. Samples are single serve, and about $2 a piece. She has at least 30 different kinds to try. The egg white protein is NOT the same as liquid. It is made by J. Robb, and it is a protein powder. Also, if you buy your protein powders from GNC or Vitamin Shoppe, if they don't work, you can take them back for a full refund, even if they are open and used. Don't waste money, there is no reason to.
To be seriously honest though, if this has been going on for this long, no protein in the World is going to help. YOU NEED TPN to get back your nutritional status. Period. You also need to TRY DIFFERENT medications. There are about 20 different acid reducers/blockers/PPIs. Not every one works for every person. And sometimes, it takes a higher dose than normally recommended and/or even a combination of a few different ones to get it right. This could be a major contributer. Also, dehydration and poor nutritional status CAUSES nausea. It's a vicious cycle. This is why it is critical that you push fluids and protein powder in your J-tube and get on TPN to get out of the hole and end the cycle.
Dr. Kim is NOT who you want to see. There is a SHORT list of DS surgeons (real ones that is) and an even shorter one of those that will work with complicated cases. Dr. Stewart in Denton, and if he won't see you, branch out. Contact Dr. Kasheshian or Dr. Rabkin, even Dr. Gagner and Dr. Elariny.

You need to see Dr. Daryl Stewart in Denton for a better evaluation of your surgical situation. Don't waste your time with Dr. Kim.
You also need to see specialists in the fields of your actual problems, like gastroenterology and hematology.
I'm so sorry that you landed with Dr. Barker. Please get with Dr. Stewart ASAP. And expand your medical care team. There are some people who are more local to you who could assist you with finding better care.

You never learned to use the search function? Oh wait, OH doesn't have one.
You never learned to use the Yahoo advanced search function?

This isn't going to help you, but for all the pre-ops who are reading this, don't forget to ASK the people on this site about the surgeon you are thinking of using! Especially if he isn't listed on the DSFacts site as a "vetted" DS surgeon.
And this is another reason to put your surgeon's name into your profile - odds are, you will get some comments on using someone who isn't vetted - especially if we know some dirt on them.

My BCBS of Alabama limited to me Dr. Barker (in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area) if I wanted them to pay for the surgery. I am guessing they have a reduced pay scale with Dr. Barker's office.
At the time of my surgery, as far as I knew Dr. Barker was a highly rated WL surgeon. I had no reason to think otherwise. And since all the tests and consultants I have had probe and prod me while in the hospital have found no problem with the actual procedure that was done, I still really don't have any reason to doubt Dr. Barker's skills.
My concern is the follow up care. Until my 3rd hospitalization they didn't seem to be taking my condition seriously. Now they are very concerned but don't have an answer to the problem. Dr. Thompson is a great guy and I like him a lot but I am just not getting any answers other than time will heal the problem.

I'm curious - why just orange sherbet or cottage cheese? Is there anything about them that makes them more palatable to you? It sounds almost like there is a psychological element to your vomiting/nausea. A few people on this board have developed severe psychological aversions to food. Has that area been explored at all with you?
Also, I think there is a clear, fruit-flavored protein water that is higher than the Special K. Have you looked into those?

I don't know why some items do ok and others result in immediate expulsion of the consumed food. I can't eat meat at all. I am just now getting to where I can eat some yogurt. I have even tried Gerber Graduate baby food. It is so yucky I would throw it up even if I was healthy.
We have talked to the psychologist about a mental block with food and she ruled it out. I want to eat desperately. I get so hungry and my tummy just growls but then when I go ahead and try to eat, it is miserable. I can't try eating in public because I am too embarrassed to end up throwing up in public.
I would love to have more info on the fruit flavored protein if you have any. I have tried Isopure and it was like drinking too sweet syrup with a horrible aftertaste. The smell was almost too much. Maybe there are some I haven't been able to get info on that you know about?
Thanks
Jacque

I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds horrible.
Regarding the constant feeling of hunger, are you able to tolerate some soup? I find that something warm and comforting in my tummy helps.
I dont know about the clear fruit proteins Julie's referring to, but I do know many people like the Syntax nectars, which come in fruit flavors. Vitalady has samples of lots of protein flavors available on her website.

Isopure and Designer Whey both make clear ready to drink protein beverages that might go down a bit better for you. I think the Designer Whey one is tastier. DW has two different ones. One is in a bottle and the other in a can. The can one is called XAPP and is lightly carbonated. You can get them at GNC.
I'm glad you are posting here. There are many decades of combined experience here.

My thought..... are you so restricted you need to sip and chew teaspoon bites of food or liquid>>>?
for many months and some times on tiny tummy days it is only a fewbites,, and small chewed VERY slow..
In your rush to get protein down is it too fast,, you may need 30 min to an hour to still sip fluids,,,
dilute any protein down and try sipping it SLOW.
I use a product from Bariatric Eating. it is unflavored instante dissolving so I put it in soup. milk. yogurt. pudding, even gatoraid. Even crystale light, walmart brand.. again I dilute it down with more water as to make it not as sweet...
I even prefer water with lemon slices squezzed in it and sweet and low. then disolve the BE protein it itand drink...
I did not care for Dr Barker at all,,,did not answer my questions well and got very irritated when I even questioned his "procedures" I was one of the ones that said look for someone else.... I'm glad I did.
Sorry it did not work out well for you..
good luck,,

I'm sorry you're going through this.
I want to respond to your comment that someone here should have warned you about your surgeon. He's not listed on www.dsfacts.com as a vetted DS surgeon. I've been on this forum for two years, and at least multiple times per week, if not daily, there are posts directing people to www.dsfacts.com and cautioning them to use only a surgeon listed there. The people that maintain that site go through great lengths of their own time to qualify surgeons and maintain that list. Surgeons cant pay to get on that list or advertise, it is purely a DS community maintained list. I suppose I'm preaching to you a bit about that, but I hope this helps some pre-ops.
It's water under the bridge for you now, I think the best thing you can do is find another doctor for help.
