Is low carbing different for you as a post-op?

The only fruit I ate as a newbie like you was watermellon. And I ate it because it was almost liquid. And since my tummy was tiny, I didn't eat much of it. I didn't counting carbs really until about 3 or 4 months out because I would eat protein, protein shakes and water and be full. When you need to really start counting the carbs is when you can eat more than what you have to eat. If you can eat all your protein needed and still have room for carbs then you need to eat complex carbs next and then extras.

Fruit is not low carb. It is a good carb, it is to me but really it isn't something you want to eat much until you can eat everything else needed to be health. And be careful of the volume. I ate raisins one time, lost track of the quantity and ending up being 'laxatated'. (made up word)

After about 6 months I could eat a serving of fruit every now and then. At a year, I could eat a couple of serving of fruit when I wanted. Now I eat what I want when I want but I still try to be smart about it. Protein first. Complex carbs next. Fruits next. Sweets last.

No fruit. When I had surgery, my doctor's food recommendations during the weight loss phase were no sugar, no fruit, no juice. Protein first and fat is your friend.

So the people who are low carbing each day to try and drop a few, what are you eating??? I am trying to loose a few pounds- 10 would be amazing! I am trying to low carb- this morning I had a 2 eggs omlet, with onions, mushrooms, salami, and cheese- coffee and I am sitting at my desk at working snacking on Peanut Butter. I also had some cheese. I am very bloated in my stomach and my legs are swollen- can this be from the heat 100 degrees??? Help!!!

If your legs are swollen, your weight could be water weight. How is your sodium? Your circulation?

To be honest with you, I had a serving of frosted mini-wheats with whole milk for breakfast. That within itself is 45grams of carbs.

But for lunch I'm having a salad with double chicken meat. for about 40 grams of protein. I also snacked on nuts midmorning and I'll have a yogurt and some more nuts this afternoon.

For dinner, I'll have an open faced homemade hamburger with double cheese, lettuce, tomato, mayo. I may have a couple of homemade fries with catsup. I make really big burgers.

And tonight for a I may have some ice cream or maybe not. Just depends.

Right at the moment I'm not trying to lose weight. If I was, I would have had 2 boiled eggs and bacon for breakfast instead of the cereal. And I'd go hard core meat all day long for snacks to stay full. I would not pay attention to calories but would try to cut way down on the carbs.

Meat, cheese, eggs. Low carb veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, zucchini, asparagus, green beans. No starchy vegetables like potatoes, corn or green peas.

Edema could be caused by heat... or by protein malnourishment. Have you had your protein levels checked lately?

What about tomatoes? We have ooodles of fresh, homegrown tomatoes this year and I love them. I eat 1 a day and maybe a few cherry. Am I bad??

There is no such thing  as "bad."  It is a question of balance.  Tomatoes are not  highly caloric.  I eat lots of them.

I agree, no such thing as "bad" (well, except maybe pure sugar!). 1/2 c. of chopped tomatoes have 2.5 grams of net carbs. Not bad at all. It all depends on how low you are trying to keep your carb count. If it is super low, then one would probably try to keep it to a minimum. For a moderate carb intake, tomatoes are a great choice!

Right now I am hoping my heritage tomato plants will produce before the end of the season. Yum!
