Does drinking barium for a CT scan equate to particularly bad cramping for us?
I get to do this tonight & tomorrow for an abdominal & chest CT scan tomorrow. I read the possible side effects - nasusea, cramping, etc.
Should I expect to not get a lot of sleep tonight from trips to the bathroom? Should I expect particularly bad abdominal cramping? Anyone have problems drinking the last 1/2 of the bottle in one go prior to leaving for the hospital? Seems like an awful lot of liquid at once given how thick it is.

Lisey--I have had a couple CT scans with contrast since surgery and did not have any troubles whatsoever with drinking the liquid or cramping. If the flavor is awful, I guess that would be the main thing leading to nausea. I have a pretty strong stomach most of the time and did fine. Try using a straw, too. That generally works.
Thanks, Kayla. It wasn't that bad tasting, not good, but not "vomiting" awful. Interestingly enough, though, it took me 3 - 4 minutes to drink it & within 5 minutes of finishing it, I certainly did rush to the bathroom. I felt my tummy giving that cramping feeling along the sides of my abdomen (this is very common for me, warning that I need to go). Other than that, just some mild cramping a handful of times last night & today.
Mild cramping is actually pretty common for me. I remember when I had that emergency appendectomy last Aug - it had formed an adhesion around my small bowel & was stuck to my colon. The surgeon told me that I had a lot of adhesions & he had done what he could to fix the ones he could get to easily, but didn't want to move my intestines around too much b/c they were so swollen at that time from the bowel obstruction & delayed diagnosis. My guess is that maybe some parts are stuck together (on the outside) & so it produces mild cramping (& occasionally, really bad cramping) . . . but, this is beyond the scope of the barium question!
