I had an event to go to today. It was an SCA University which is basically college about the Middle Ages. It was from 8am to 6pm and involved a lot of walking to and from classes and sitting for about 7 hour-long classes. When I got home and changed into mundane clothes, I saw that my ankles were swollen! I mean about twice their normal size. I have never had swollen ankles so it kind of scared me. I have diabetes and every time I see my PCP, he checks my ankles for swelling ( I've never asked him why ). Is this something alarming for a diabetic?  Should I be worried?

Diabetics can swell due to kidney or heart disease, but your feet were probably swelling just due to increased activity and blood pooling due to gravity.  I get it too.  I would only worry if it doesn't resolve.

I get that on long days at class if I don't drink enough and I eat salty foods.

I googled it and things like liver failure, heart failure, dehydration, and other things. I had a hreat catch about 1-2 months ago in preparation for the DS surgery. Got a clean bill of thearthe for my heart,  I doubt its liver failure becasue no jaundice. I guess I will just elevathen and see if it works. Thanks to the above posters. They gave me great advise.

Thank you

It's called sitting in one position for too long in hot weather, possibly in a chair that impaired your circulation more than the chairs you usually use. You might also have been a bit dehydrated, which causes swelling like that in a lot of people as your body holds on to fluids.

One of the reasons your doc checks for swelling in your ankles is because it's a quick and simple way for him/her to "wonder" about your heart function and circulation. There should also be a look at your feet for wounds, discolorations or other changes.

I knew about the feet checking, but I never really thought/knew about the ankle swelling. They seem a little bit better today. I will sip, sip, sip and keep them elevated as much as I can today.
Thanks Elizabeth N.

You know that "elevated" means above your heart, right? Just sitting in a chair with feet propped is only slightly better than useless. Lie down and put stuff under your legs to lift your feet at least a foot higher than prone and it should go right down within a couple hours.

Yes. I just meant that I had to do at least a little housework today, so after I do that (and in between) I will lay on the couch with some pillows under my feet. I will get more rest today than I did yesterday.
