Gastroparesis/GERD Help Needed. Reglan issues?

After being in the hospital yet again they did a radioactive egg test to see how fast it moved through my body. I had to eat the egg and then they watched it move throughout my body. The results were severe continious GERD/Reflux and Gastoparesis. I was told my food does empty but it takes a long time and part of the DS is actually used to fix this condition so they felt my rate was even slower. They also again noted esophagus dismotility and think I am having spams and thats what the contraction like pain is.

They issue is they dont like to treat the Gastroparesis with the same meds as the esophagus dismotility because they said it can slow down the emptying process anymore.

They want me to stay on my 2x daily dose of Protonix but want to put me on Reglan for the nausea, vomiting, and for the Gastroparesis. I have read awful things about this medicine and I have pretty bad anxiety disorder as it is so I am not sure if I want to take this or not. I was told there is nothing on the market like it and they would like me to stay in the hospital tonight and try it. I am worried and really try and stay away with anything that has high side effects of anxiety/depression issues. Any input or another med that would work like this that I could possibly ask for? Thanks in advance

I think the issue is the chronic dehydration/vomitting/nausea feeling and now with that or as a side effect from possibly the reflux and or my stomach not emptying fast enough.

Has anyone had these issues? What did you take? Is there anything else that doesnt have such severe side effects like Reglan seems to find? I seem to only find negative things about it and like I said they want to start me on it tonight. I am worried and really try and stay away with anything that has high side effects of anxiety/depression issues. Any input or another med that would work like this that I could possibly ask for? Thanks in advance

Edited to add last part due to new IV needing to be placed and talking to a nurse about my concerns of the Reglan.

Zofran for nausea (EXPENSIVE).

Domperidone (not approved in the US for some reason - available over the internet, from what I hear).

I have Zofran and Phenergan for nausea in pill form, oral tablet and also suppository.

They are trying to put me on the Reglan for the food not emptying fast enough and said it would be a perk that it does help with nausea and reflux issues. But I do take meds for my reflux and for my nausea.

I am just trying to figure out about the Reglan issue and if there is anything that does the same thing available in the US for this type of issue that doesnt cause such bad side effects or ones that at least dont include issues of anxiety and depression.

Kimberly,

Ask about the Domperidone that Diana mentioned.

It is used for the same things that Reglan is used for but without the side effects.  I am pretty sure that you can get it at Canadian pharmacies, so if your Dr. would write you an Rx, you could send for it yourself.

I will ask but I am not thinking they will write me a script for something outside of the US, but its worth asking. If anyone knows of anything in the US that is similar without the side effects that would be of great help. I am trying to do research and being poked and prodded at the same time. I am glad they have finally given me some answers now and know somewhat what is going on. Thanks!

I've taken Reglan several times, as long as a month at a time (after my DS), with no ill effects. If you have no way of getting the domperidone (sp?), I think it might be worth a try. One of my SILs is on it long-term (as in for years now) due to diabetes-related gastroparesis and reports no problems at all.

It's definitely a risk you want to consider carefully. The psycho side effects are horrible indeed. I'm awfully glad I dodged that particular bullet.

Yes those effects would be awful and I have to keep that in mind. When I mentioned them to the gastro Dr he said they werent common but a friend I spoke to was on it (I just found this out) and it made her anxiety/depression worse. I just dont feel like thats a risk and am hoping they will find another that doesnt seem to come with those side effects. Glad that it worked ok for you. At first I was open to a short term thing but then realized they want it to be a long term thing.

I was on Reglan after surgery. Once I stopped my GERD got real bad so I was put back on the Reglan for a month and also protonix once a day. The doctor only wanted me on Reglan for one month and I am 13 months out and just came off Protonix.

I feel bad about your anxiety disorder. It's debilitating, isn't it?

Are you still on it? Any issues?

See for me they are wanting to use it since I am not emptying food as fastly as I would like. They said that it would help the reflux and nausea etc but that was just icing on the cake as I take other things for those. So I cant seem to find anything else that does what Reglan does that might help me.

They paged the Dr on call but he wanted to wait for me to see the Dr tomorrow but I did not take it yet.

I have had anxiety issues for many many years now and am on a lot of meds for it and have it under control besides a breakthrough attack every now and then. I just dont feel I can risk that and possibly the other side effects that seem Reglan causes.

I found out that I was allergic to Reglan the hard way. The first time I took it, the left side of my face started drooping, and the left side of my tongue started to curl up uncontrollably! It was terrible. I had to go to the ER where they treated me, then discharged me later. I will never take that stuff again. However, my reaction to it may have been uncommon. I do not know what the percentage of side effects are.
When push comes to shove....shove hard!
