Best foods for getting protein (aside from shakes)
A question about the best foods for the DS'er to eat to get his/her protein. I understand about the protein shakes/coffee/etc. But I have seen greek yogurt and cottage cheese mentioned. I have tried both of those and can't stand them...taste and/or texture. But I am pre-op, so will my tastes change drastically after surg, or are there other foods out there? I like eggs and cheeses...no problems with milk products, but I think I have seen on this site where some have become lactose intolerant post surgery. So any suggestions from the ones who have "gone before"?
Thanks
Beth

Post op I hated the ricotta and greek yogurt. I ate soft and hard cheeses, scrambled eggs, wendy's chili, cold cuts. I ate sf pudding mixed with protein powder. I ate cream of chicken soup.
I ate soft chicken and hamburger mixed with soup or sour cream. I really found so long as the bites were small and it was mixed with some kind of fat (cream of soup, sour cream, mayo, etc) I could eat it. I also ate a lot of egg salad and spam.

Amanda,
After healing. I know that protein shakes will probably "get old" after a while, and I just wanted some ideas that will be good for post DS...high in protein, low in carbs. However, i will continue to suppliment with protein powders...shakes,pudding, coffee, but I just want to make sure I eat the right things protein-wise.
Thanks,
Beth

I can't say enough good things about consuming eggs. The albumin in eggs is a very well-utilized source of protein by us, and I try to eat three a day. Also, any whey based protein bars are great if they're not to sickly sweet for you. I still love, after almost five years, Power Crunch bars. One of them is equal to the protein in two eggs, and I start almost every day of my life off with them. I was lactose intolerant immediately post-op, as so many of us are, but I was able to regain tolerance for cheeses, including ricotta and cottage. I love Greek yogurt, and even though you don't like it now, perhaps you might at a later date. I doctor it up with s/f preserves or s/f syrup and walnuts.
