Gaining Weight 2 Years Out
We all "fall off the wagon" occasionally.
One of the most senseless, empty calorie/carb/junkfood/crap we can consume is regular soda. That is the truth.........but I sometimes crave a little bit and have a little bit. Same as having a slice of cake or a candy bar. I am human. If you cannot have it as a treat, then you need to cold turkey it out and not take another drink ever. Some people drink diet sodas and once they taste a regular after awhile, it's horrible to them. I am not one of those people. I still think it taste awesome and that's why it has to be a treat.
For now, to fill that void one of my favorites is diet cherry limeaids or cherry coke zeros from Sonic.
Oh also, we are in maintenance. I know some people feel and like the freedom of not weighing. Great for them, but I am not that good at being good. So I use a scale as a tool to monitor me so I can modify behavior. If I see a few lbs creep up, I knock out my treats. But if I sit in denial and avoid weighing, I'll tell myself tomorrow will be different, and it never comes.

Everyone here has already chimed in with wonderful advice. Carbs were a big part of my downfall as far as my failed surgery went IMHO. That and not finding a support group to work with. Two on a long list of regrets that I have.
Coke and Pepsi came out with really tasty Zero drinks that give you the taste, but spare you the sugar that your body definitely doesnt need.
Its good you are trying to get a handle on things now, rather than doing what I did and just turning a blind eye to the situation until it got beyond my control once again. Props to you on that.
Good luck on your journey

It can be so scrumptious to eat like a healthy DSer!!! Seriously yummy goodness. I will say, though, that I tend to cook more now than I did before so it takes more effort than fast food. If I do eat fast food, I go with a large burger with cheese with no bun. A lot of people will do a "topless" burger with only 1 of the 2 buns. It's good particularly for maintenance. I usually only eat at restaurants these days & so get a big yummy burger & will eat some fries, but maybe a 1/3 AT MOST. If you eat a house salad drenched with cheese & dressing, followed by a real 8 oz burger smothered in ketchup & mayo, there's only room left for a few fries.
Every morning I toast 1 piece of bread, heavy butter. I make two over hard/ flat eggs & one large precooked sausage patty zapped for 60 seconds in the microwave. Stack the bread, 1 egg, sausage, piece of cheese, & another egg. I've got 20 gms of protein & 12 carbs. There's even bread out there that's like 5 gms of carbs. Seriously delicious & takes about 6 minutes to cook.
I just made for dinner - browned 1.5 lb hamburger with seasonings and added chopped onions, tomatoes, corn. I then threw in 1/2 jar of pasta sauce, 4 oz of cream cheese, 1/2 cup shredded colby cheese, and 3/4 cup of mozzarella cheese. Ate 2 bowls. Totally yummy. Takes more time to make, but costs a lot less, is a lot healthier for me - getting more protein & less carbs, I don't gas myself & others out, & I don't gain weigt. I then have left overs for 3 other meals. I packed one for lunch for tomorrow.
Eating DS healthy is so yummy. Big juicy steaks! Shrimp. Cheese/ meat dishes!!!!!
It's a habit you can choose to get into or not. Gaining weight will only be the first of your sufferings if you don't change. I eat chocolate, arguably too much, but . . . I ALWAYS get my protein & vitamins in first. I've gained 2 - 3 pounds from my goal, which still keeps me at a 24 BMI. I'm 25 months post-op.

Hey there....so I am right there with you, however, I am 3+ years out. I used to LOVE my Mt Dew and also ate anything and everything I wanted. Yes, I know bad me. I did usually manage to get in my 100gms of protein to my hundreds of grams of carbs. And like you I gained almost 20 pounds.....so my point, it happens. We did not end up obese by making good food choices.
Surgery fixes your body not your mind. You are on the right path to fixing this. Admitting there is a problem with what you are choosing to shovel in is the first step.
I have found that the daily bites, vites, and exercites is a very good way to be accountable for your actions/inactions. Please browse through it and post at least for awhile. You can get a handle on this and no, your DS is not broke. Feed it right and you will loose the weight. I have learned to love my protein shakes and they keep my protein up where it needs to be.
Good luck with this.

You're experiencing carb withdrawal and it's pretty rough the first few days. The good news is it will get better and you'll start to have less effects and cravings. Just stick with it. I think you'll be surprised how the weight will start to come off by just cutting out the full sugar soda.
