Tammy,

Larissa may wander over here eventually.  She had surgery with a surgeon we BEGGED her to not use...and we threatened and cajoled, too...and she had a less than stellar experience.  She seems to be a good sport about serving as the DS board "bad example," so pay attention to her if she does show up.

I certainly wouldn't want to be serving as the DS board's "bad example"  :)  I hope that she is doing well .....

Tammy -

Just in case Larissa doesn't make it over here, I thought I'd give you a link to her blog.  She too was self-pay and if I recall correctly, didn't have insurance.  From what I gathered from her posts and blog, complications + no insurance = living hell.   I'd hate to see anyone else have such problems.

This page notes the start of her complications and then go back (4,3,2,1) to see her progress.  I'm happy that she now seems to be doing very well.

Well, say helloooooo to the DS board's official post child for chosing the wrong surgeon.

Now, I can't say a thing good or bad about your surgeon, because I used Dr. Haucuz. Not only wasn't he a vetted DS surgeon, there were already reports of bad outcomes from other surguries on other boards. (RNY and lap band.) But, I was an idiot and figured "every surgeon starts out a beginner" which is true...but let them use others for guinea pigs, not you!!

Seriously, I know it would be SO HARD to cancel your surgery with this doctor and reschedule with another...but honestly, I nearly died, and it's killed me financially. My blog has all the details - even my stupid posts where I tried to justify going against advice here on the boards. I don't want to claim I didn't have those thoughts, so they are still there.

Good luck to you. I hope you are better at listening to the people with the good advice than I was. I'm AAALLLL ears these days, and any of the above posters have no issues telling me I'm an idiot when they think so.

Larissa -
Thank you for responding to this post.  I hate that you are a poster child for what can go wrong, but I'm so happy you are doing well now.   I applaud your courage in leaving your earlier blog posts and am glad you are willing to pay it forward.

I would like to repeat an earlier comment (or two).

Dr. Gilberto Ungson, in Hermosillo, is a very well respected bariatric surgeon and gastroenterologist.

I am so grateful that I was able to go for him for my DS.  It didn't hurt that his prices were nearly unbeatable, but I got such good care at the hospital, the surgery went smoothly, and the recovery was without complication.  He is a terrific surgeon who surrounds himself with a great staff.

You're not stuck with your surgeon until they wheel you into the operating room and put that mask over your face.

Please give serious consideration to selecting a qualified DS surgeon.

I do wish you the best.

I wish you only the best of luck. I know how exciting it must be with the date coming up and how hard it would be to cancel surgery you have been looking forward to and then going back and finding a new Dr and going through all that work again, but it just may save your life. These ladies (and gentleman) know what they are talking about. Please dont go with a surgeon who is not vetted and who is not well known. No matter how nice or inexpensive he is, its not worth risking your life and or health for it. If nothing else you have your family to consider. Best wishes and know there are so many people willing to help you find another vetted surgeon and help you get the best possible surgery/surgeon.

The DS is a MAJOR surgery --- it is NOT a hangnail.  Whomever this surgeon is, if he was a DS surgeon, a number of us would know who he is ---- we don't, which means you should not use him.  Bottom line.  This is your LIFE on the line ---- YOUR LIFE.

DON'T.  GO.  THROUGH.  WITH.  IT.

Ditto what everyone else is saying!  Please reconsider your choice of surgeon.  Dr. Ungson in Hermasillo is the only DS surgeon in Mexico so far.  He has a stellar reputation, he trained with a world famous surgeon, (Dr. Baltasar), his prices are excellent.  Please change surgeons!!

My name is Tammy and I am pretty new to the boards although I have posted a couple of times.  You ladies are great and have always answered my questions in an honest way.

I am the mother of 7 children and I am married to the most awesome Douglas.   I have been overweight all of my life.  It has been a constant disheartening battle.  The fad diets, the prescribed diets, the starvation.  It has been an long journey.   I have been trying to have weightloss surgery since 2003 with so many insurance denials I lost count.  Having no insurance at this point I have decided to self pay.

I am topping the scales now at 303lbs  it has been my dirty little (big) secret for so long.  I am ready to get it out in the open and let it go.

I will be having the DS procedure done Sat.  I am so excited and scared.  Nervous and anxious.  I don't hardly know what to do with myself.

I have researched and researched but I know in the end nothing can prepare me for the actual surgery.

I would appreciate any advice and support you can offer me.

Tammy
Wow, 7 kids.   You've got my respect.
