As usual Jenna, another great post.  This is an excellent point to make.

When I'm doing to indulge in something, even if it is a carb type treat, I make sure I reach for something with the highest fat content.  It takes some getting used to!

I'm glad you're doing your research.  Just remember, WLS isnt like buying a car.  You're choosing a new digestive system that you will live with for the rest of your life.  And choosing incorrectly can mean you will have side effects that are hard to live with, and/or inadequate weight loss.  That could even mean another more expensive, and more risky surgery.

I recommend that you first pick the surgery you want, and then plan on how to pay for it.  With a $15K budget you will be close to some self-pay prices.  But in any event it is worth saving a little more and taking a little more time to get what you want and what you will live with for the rest of your life.

The best Latin America based surgeons to explore are
Dr Ungson in Mexico
Dr Marchesini in Brazil

There are a few US Surgeons with good self pay rates:
Dr Daryl Stewart in Texas
Dr William Peters in Scranton, PA
These will be a little higher than your $15K budget

 Hi Vicki,

It's great that you're doing research. I remember when I was pre-op, I was so eager to have surgery ASAP. But I'd urge you to take your time researching and really think through all the options.

Dr. Ungson in Mexico is $13k for open DS or $16k for lap DS, and I believe those are all-inclusive.

Something important to consider in your budget, given that you are struggling financially, is the cost of supplements and protein after DS (or any surgery!). There have been some good threads in the past couple of days about what people pay per month for supplements. 100 grams of protein and vitamins are non-negotiable with the DS, so I would not recommend having the surgery unless you can make sure those costs are covered for yourself.

Good luck!

Thank you! Another fantastic posts Jenna! I think this is just the thing that needs to be on my continuing DS Sticky. The way you broke it down is so easy to understand and I've no doubt it will benefit the curious and pre ops to boot.

I wanted to come back and thank you profusely for this post! I have been trying so hard to get away from sweets but they keep drawing me back. Other habits like caffeine, nicotine, and sodas I did break over the past few months. (No one was more surprised than me!) But sugar still has a hold on me. I am hoping it is from stress and being nervous....not just about surgery but other things going on. This post makes me relax a little more!
