Merry Christmas to me!! Insurance Approval for my Panniculectomy!!
I found out last week that I was approved (finally) for my panniculectomy!! I am so excited it isn't even funny...I have carried almost all of my weight for pretty much my whole life in my tummy/pannus - so it is, needless to say, HUGE!!
I will NOT be getting married with it - and that makes me beyond happy!! I would also love to have a tummy tuck - but I haven't had kids yet and we plan to do so in the next few years - so I need to wait until after that to have it done!
I should be getting my actual surgery date from the PS office later this morning...coordination is an issue b/c I am also have two hernia repairs done and my PS doesn't do them - so we have to coordinate my PS, hernia repair surgeon, anesthesiologist, my work schedule and my co-supervisor's work schedule!
I am also very ready to have the hernias repaired! They are getting huge, poke out almost constantly and actually starting to hurt more regularly and starting to make me feel icky...so the time has come to get them fixed - well it is probably well past time, but I was waiting to have them fixed with the panniculectomy so I only have to get cut once!

Congratulations on your approval for Plastics. How difficult was it to get approval from insurance. I am needing to go there and start this process. I too carried all my excess weight in my stomach area so needless to say after 200 lb loss I need PS What insurance do you have. I have Anthem Blue Cross.
Thanks

Thanks!!
It wasn't THAT difficult but it wasn't a walk in the park either...
I started with a an appointment with my PS to see if I was a candidate for a panniculectomy and to see if he thought that I could get it covered under my insurance. The answer to both was yes - and if you can get ins to cover it - you get it once - so be sure you close to where you want to be.
Things I also had been doing:
Seeing what chiro - and complaining about lower back pain and prepping him for my eventual panniculectomy. When the time came to submit I asked him to write a letter stating that he thought getting my pannus removed would help with my lower back pain - which he did!
Documenting (with my PS) rashes I got under my tummy - I did this twice since May. WITH pics - it wasn't an awesome fun time - but worth it.
I saw the PS in May and Sept. In May we thought that I would continue to lose weight relatively quickly. So he recommended I wait a year and then do it. By September it was clear that wasn't happening for whatever reason. My thinking is that it is due to my 2 huge hernias. And I wanted to have hernia repair and panniculectomy done together so we submitted in October. So that we could do the procedure after the first of the year.
I was denied the first time b/c they referred solely to the May PS' notes - where he said I wasn't at a stable weight and that I was submitting for the procedure in less than a years' time. So the PS' office wrote a letter stating that I had reached a stable weight plateau and that he thought that it was appropriate to do it after the first of the year. I was approved from that appeal. Thankfully b/c I really DON'T have the extra cash for that in addition to paying for a wedding!
I have Principal insurance. I think that as long as you can prove that it is medically necessary then you can get a panniculectomy approved. Most ins co's won't approve a tummy tuck...I don't think...
Good luck!
