It is time for me to get a perm for my hair.  I scheduled to have one on Dec. 2 and my surgery is Dec. 14th.  Has anyone had a perm right before surgery and if so how did it go.  I know that some people loss hair after and I didn't know how it would affect my hair and possible hair loss.  Just don't know what to expect.

Thanks,

Wendy

I would do it. As you recover, you'll feel beautiful and who knows when you will feel good enough to go through a perm post-op. While you are at it, get a manicure and pedicure! :)

If you are going to lose hair, I doubt a perm or not doing a perm will effect it either way.

Go ahead and get it done. You really can't do much about losing it initially post-op. I took extra zinc and selenium, drank lots and lots of water, got 100+ grams of protein in every day and still lost some...didn't come out in clumps though and what came back was really healthy.

The hair loss starts at around 3 months out. I would strongly urge you to braid your hair (2 braids if possible) before going to the hospital because while you are in there you wont have the energy to fuss with your hair. You may not even have the energy to fuss with it for the first week or so and curly hair tangles really easily. The braid will keep it in decent shape.

oh god... my mom put two braids in my hair.. by the time I got out of the hospital (6 days later) i was sent to a rehab hospital, took my first shower post op there, and my hair was ****** the hell up, the braids ended up being like a fricken bird nest, totally entangled mess. When I finally came home from surgery, about 2 weeks, it took my mom almost an hour to come through the knot... i guess my experience is rare because of how long i was in the hospital... but i'll never braid my hair again! lol

Was it a tight french braid or 2 loose braids? The only part that can really tangle in a braid is the part that isnt braided. I had 2 french braids and I had them in for about 5 days and my hair is super curly and it was shockingly easy to manage. I can only imagine what my hair would have turned into without the braid. It would have been one giant mass. I know from experience lol. I got the flu really badly one year and I was in bed for a week, couldnt do anything and when I was feeling better my entire head was one giant knot, it was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen! I seriously contemplated taking scissors and cutting it all off it was so bad.

it wasn't french braids, just regular braids, so I suppose that is why that happened.

I did tell my Mom to just cut it out, but she wouldn't... she took the time to untangle it all...
even though she can be a beyotch sometimes, i don't know where i'd be without her!!

Hi to a fellow North Carolinian!! Go for it!! Your hair is going to fall out about 3 months post op so a perm now isn't going to be a problem.

Congrats on your date!! That will be here before you know it!!!

usually just some.

telogen effluvium, look it up.

i have a bald spot on the back of my head, but luckily my hair is so thick that it covers it. No biggie, altho I did freak out the first time it was discovered.
