"Citrate," he says. "Not enough citrate."

you found a doc who grasps the old wive's tale, "lemonade for kidney stones"

the only one I ever met who grasped it moved away!

Mine's a big supporter of lemonade...and he said that there is even more citrate in oj...who knew.  But in this case, I'm harboring a honker that has a really big head start.  (Actually, he said that I could spend the day swimming in a pool of lemon juice with my mouth wide open and I still wouldn't be able to get in enough citrate.)

Is there an OTC pill to fix this situation? I take it that vitamin C isn't the answer, so more fresh lemons, limes and oranges are our only home remedy? What about potassium citrate and how much? It comes in OTC in 99mg pills.

Sue, this is an eyeopening thread. Thanks.

"Drink fresh lemonade" was the first thing my husband's urologist told him, after a bout of 3 kidney stones passing in 2 weeks.  oof.

Hey Sue,

Great post!  Very good information here.  Here's my two cents worth:

You might want to google "sour salt".  It's a salty supplement that is pure citrate (citric acid).  It's a great way to supplement citrate in your diet and combat stones without adding another pill to your regimen.

Hope all turns out well for you!  We're thinking about you!

Stupid question time: Wouldn't supplementing Vitamin C assist in this?  Why doesn't it help?

huge difference in molecular structure.  You will find many references if you google citric acid vs ascorbic acid.

k, sooooo with all this discussion I'm wondering now what I could do to ward off this problem (don't have it YET, but have a history of kidney stones from prior to the DS).  I am ALLERGIC to lemons, limes, oranges etc...anything with citric acid in them.... :(  now what?????
