Cheerios - Gas... Bloating... Dying....

Ok, I will admit that I ate something I shouldn't have. I had 1/2c of Honey Nut Cheerios with Soy Milk on Tuesday night. It was after I finished my protein for the day and my carbs have been really really low the last week. I read the carbs on the cereal and milk and decided it would put me just over 50 grams and I live alone so if I got some gas I could deal with it.

I WAS WRONG!

OMG, 2 days later and I still feel bloated. I have never had that before, I have gotten gas but have never experienced the stomach puffing, never ending bloated feeling. I couldn't sleep last night but managed to work from home. Still not better today (even though I had my normal bowel movements Wednesday morning). I cannot sleep tonight, I am not working tomorrow, just can't bare to deal with idiots on 2 days lack of sleep.

Has anyone else had this problem, how long does it last. I promise I will never again have Cheerios, I gave the box away but it's curse is still around. I have assumed the position... with my butt in the air... I hope it helps.

Sorry you're feeling bad but why were you trying to get your carbs up?

Oh no, I misspoke, I wasn't trying to get my carbs up... I was just saying that I wouldn't be over my carb limit too much for the day. I try to stay under 50 a day and Tuesday only had like 17 when I tried the forbidden fruit....

Ah...I see. Plan Rice Krispies might be a better choice next time. Maybe you still have some gluten intolerance but I would think in 24 hours, you'd be done with it. Feel better.

Thanks Gina,
I think I am off cereal all together. I didn't think 1/2 a cup would be that bad. I didn't think that it would cause problems for this long.

Oh girlllll, you are speaking my language...I'm the queen of being unable to eat cereal.  Or bread. Or pasta.  Or cookies.  Or cake.  Or anyFREAKINGthing that has wheat or white flour in it.  I can't even eat the gluten free flours.  It all gives me horrificly painful and smelly gas.  The pain is the part that bothers me the most.  Soy can bother me too, so your half cup of Cheerios and soymilk woulda been the death of me too.  THAT SAID, it would not still be bothering me beyond the next morning.  Once I clear out the next morning after getting ahold of gluten, I'm good to go MOST of the time.  It would NEVER last from Tuesday night until Thursday morning. The reason I'm saying this is that I'd guess it could have been something you ate Wednesday to exacerbate your already painful issues from the cheerios on Tuesday night.  Do you have these issues often?  You may have some other intolerances mixed in there that you aren't aware of yet.  You said you used soymilk, are you using any milk products?  What about artificial sweetener?  Beans, cauliflower, carrots, or broccoli?  Bread (even whole wheat can bother)?

Beyond an intolerance to certain foods, there are times when I get ahold of a food (such as your Cheerios) and my goto foods can cause me issues as the offensive food works its way through my body.  Almost like anything I eat can make the problem worse.  AND...now that I live 98.9% gluten free...my guts seem even LESS willing to accept gluten now.  I *used* to be able to eat breaded and fried foods such as shrimp with little concern.  Last night I had 10 tiny breaded shrimp and about freaking DIED of bloating last night.

Don't know if I've helped, just some of my own observations over the past three years.  Good luck!

BTW...An elimination diet may really help you to pinpoint what's going on.

Lori,
Thank you so much for posting. I seem to be becoming MORE sensitive also. I really needed to hear what you wrote. I used to be able to eat fried chicken or nuggets and now they blow me up. I used to be able to eat a bite of a biscuit slathered in butter. I used to be able to eat corn chips.

I seem to be becoming more sensitive. I'm trying the digestive advantage for lactose to see if I can at least tolerate whey shakes.

My list of what I can eat is getting smaller.

I'm going to send you a PM.

It might have been something I ate on Wednesday that continued the problem but mostly I felt like the gas wasn't escaping. I was bloated and while I did have a bowel movement on Wednesday AM, I was still extremely bloated all day and into Wed. night. I am finally passing gas again and getting relief from the bloated feeling. (Never thought I would be thankful for farting...)

On Wednesday I had a Hard boiled egg, 1 oz of Colby Cheese, a Jr Bacon Cheeseburger (ate the bottom bun (first 1/2 bun I have had so this might be it), felt terrible and didn't eat anything else.

Did you have Gluten problems before surgery?

As for the questions Lori, no, I have never had this issue before. I have never been bloated like that. I don't think I have had Soy Milk since surgery so I will give that another try and see how that goes. I have had cream and half and half but I don't know if I have had regular milk, I don't think so. Of course I have had cheese, sour cream etc and no problems.

You are a brave, brave woman, LOL.    Even I, the queen of testing the waters, might not have attempted that at two months out...but hey, live and learn, right?
I can get a "gas hangover" that will last for a day or two when I've really gone overboard on stupid stuff (and to this day, even though it's better than it was, I still have lots of gas issues), but I'll bet it's that half a bun the second day that is still leaving you bloated.  At two months out, even the flour in gravy or a bit of barbecue sauce would make me gassy.   Like Lori - I still have problems with cereal, sad to say, even the gluten free ones.

I thought eating Cheerios would be GOOD---I had the multi grain ones.  I mean, not good for the diet but certainly not gas producing.  Wrongo for me too!!!

But yes,  I agree with the idea that once gas gets going I tend to have a sensitivity to more things.  If my system is 'calm' then I can eat the occaisional gas causing thing with little problem.  But if it's irritated and gassy even things that don't normally bother me will bother me more.

I take Phazyme if I feel very uncomfortable and it seems to help.

I do miss cereal.  I loved it pre op.
