Biggest Complaints....

There are no DS surgeons in Florida.

My husband and I went to Omaha Nebraska for DS surgery.  We have a support group that meets in Orlando every other month.  The next meeting will be Oct 2.  Send me a PM if you would like more information.  The group is not affiliated with any particular surgeon so it would be a good opportunity to talk to people who have traveled to have the DS.  We would love to have you join us.

My biggest complaint is how little carbs it takes to give me a huge amount of incredibly stinky gas.  However, I am only five months out so my system is still adjusting, and my case is worse than what most DS people have.  In fact, some have no abnormal gas issues after surgery.

Knowing what I know now, would I still have the surgery?  Yes, yes, a thousand times YES!

The biggest downside for my KIDS is that I'm going to spend their inheritance completely away, because I'm going to live to a stinking ripe old age.

The only real downside for me is white flour.  It has become known as Satan to my family now.  The gas pains double me over.  I have found that it no longer appeals to me.  Probably one of those Pavlov's Dogs type responses, I don't know.  Or like the mice in the cages getting zapped every time they do something wrong.  I've re-learned how to eat.

Really, I wish I had had this DS surgery 10 years earlier.  My life has improved 1000% over what it was pre-DS.  I have no limitations to what I can do now.  I was trapped in all my fat before.

I.  am.  not.  a.  doctor.

My biggest complaint is that most people in the medical field have no understanding whatsoever of the DS. I go to a doctor and I have to educate him/her, and although I have no problem doing that (as I am an educator by profession and an enthusiastic researcher into everything to do with my DS), it does get frustrating! Especially when they don't seem to want to learn, or can't seem to understand that it is different from the RNY, or prescribe me medications that I later find out are oil-based, even though I distinctly told them that I can't take fat-soluble medications (as my OB-GYN did when he prescribed me a hormone that I found out was packed in a peanut-oil capsule). Yes, the ignorance of the medical profession is my biggest complaint.

It did exacerbate my pre-existing gluten and lactose intolerances, which sucks, but I deal! That's a trade-off I'm happy to make for all of the benefits it's brought me!

Enjoy yours!!!!!!!!

Vitamins.

Not the taking of them, but the learning about them, and educating my doctor about them. Whatever you DO, don't just take your doc's word that your levels are "fine".

Because there are limits on how much you can absorb at one time, you have to space your vitamins out throughout the day. Some things can't be taken at the same time as other things, and then there are things that work better if you take them together. All in all, there's a lot you simply HAVE to learn.

My tastes have changed, too. There are things I just LOVE now that I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole pre-op---things like cole slaw and deviled eggs. And sadly, I no longer get the same sort of satisfaction from chocolate that I used to. (*grin*)

I find I have a necessary obsession with food as in what I need to eat and when. I am less than 2 months out and I can't wait until it just comes natural...
