It's all the new clothes you have to buy; I don't like shopping and it's the pits, you shrink out of everything you have and everything you buy. You end up giving away perfectly good clothes because they're way too big to wear.

Other than that, I think it's dealing with the ignorance of people, especially health care professionals who should know about the DS and don't know squat and the things they do know are false.

My surgery was April and I just now am able to drink water.  I will never touch Crystal Light again in my life, so help me GOD.

But it was a short lived complaint, all better now I can drink plain water.

Disclaimer: This does not happen to everyone.

Hi and welcome!

Pardon my bluntness, but I am concerned for you.  Please seriously consider another surgeon. Here is a list of vetted surgeons who perform the DS. www.dsfacts.com/duodenal-switch-surgeons.html. Unfortunately, there are none in Florida.

Your surgeon is not a vetted DS surgeon and has had a troubling history. Here are two threads for reference:

www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/4149757/Final-Update-On-Kathy3 4715-R-I-P/

www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/4239534/Another-Fatality-Newbi es-PLEASE-Research-Your-Surgeon/

As for the DS itself, I honestly don't have many complaints. If anything, my biggest complaint would be that it isn't better understood by the general public and by medical professionals, so I spend a lot of my time explaining and educating.

Please, do your research on the surgeon. Good luck to you!

I really tried to think of something that was truly a complaint...and I really can't--they all have upsides!

Always thinking about vitamins--well, I'm really healthy b/c of it!
Can't eat that whole piece of cake, etc.--well, I'm really thin because of it.
I have to do #2, 2x's every morning--well, no surprises the rest of the day!
I have iron deficiency--well, I get an hour and a half of "me" time every week for 6 weeks!  (Note: not everyone gets this--just those of us that are special!).
I've had to buy a whole new wardrobe..but now I look great in clothes I bought and won't have to buy new clothes every year because I outgrew the ones from the year before.

Seriously, all the possible "negatives" are so outweighed by the positives I've experienced that I just can't complain about anything--I knew what I was getting into and did so happily and am happy I did so!

Please consider another DS surgeon. One from www.dsfacts.com is a good start. You may have to travel but you will probably make it back on your own power.

Biggest downside? Honestly? Taking vitamins kind of blows, but it blew before my DS, too. I take about as many now as I did then and sometimes it's a pain (12-13 now vs. something like 8-10 before).

I agree - any "downside" or complaint usually has a silver lining!

Shrinking out of clothes = buying new clothes
Getting hungry more often = listening to my body and eating when I'm actually hungry and stopping eating when I'm full and actually feeling satisfied after I'm done eating (at least for a little while).

I also agree that the number one complaint I have is that so few peeps (medical and regular folks) don't know about the DS, don't get the difference between the DS and RNY, and a lot of them don't actually care or want to learn.  But that never stops me from trying to educate them!  I am open about my WLS if I think it will help someone...

And as the above posters pointed out - PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE look for a vetted DS surgeon.  This is a much more difficult surgery to perform and not all surgeons are able to do it well or at all.  You don't want to go in for the DS only to come out with an RNY b/c the surgeon couldn't actually do the DS on you.  Or even worse NOT come out of surgery at all OR have lots of issues post op.  There are many stories out there about people who have chosen to go to non-vetted DS surgeons and have had bad experiences.  Saving money or not traveling to have your DS are NOT good reasons to put your life and health on the line...it will not be worth the little money that you end up saving.

Listen to the others about reviewing other surgeons.  Yes you may have to travel but it will be worth it for something you'll be living with for the rest of your life.

I'm with Kerry - I HATE shopping, and yes you have to do quite a bit of it early out.  I'm sure that once I level out it'll be easier but right now it's a huge pain in the ass.

As far as the surgery - you have to take supplements/vitamins all day, every day.  It's no joke, it's not an option and you have to be totally committed.  Worrying about protein all day every day can also be a drag.  I really LOVE protein in all forms but every now and then you just want a carb day and you can't do that with this surgery - it's protein all the time.  Yes you can supplement, but I choose to do it with food and have to be very conscious at every meal that I'm getting in what I need.
