Side effects?!!?!??!
I've been on this board and the Yahoo Groups DS board for over four years, and I've read, at the most, several posts from folks reporting that they have a "strange" smell. It's been described as sweet, milky, or metallic, depending upon the individual. It seems to me that most have been attributed to a bacterial overgrowth in the bowel, and have responded to a course of Flagyl. It seems to be pretty darn rare though.

I've had a scent to me, but it really isn't noticeable by anyone that I have asked, and I've asked EVERYONE, even my hairdresser who for sure tells it like it is. *I* can smell it, but I don't know if it's coming out of my pores, or I'm smelling my own breath or whatever. Anyways, the smell is ketosis. It is a sweet alkaline smell to me, and not offensive at all. In the morning when I wake, it is hardly noticeable, by the evening when I shower, I can smell it more. I can definitely TASTE it, big time- sugar free gum fixes this.
Now, if we are talking about bathroom stuff. Yep, it smells different, but it's manageable. And, who's poop smells like flowers anyway?

Unfortunately, there is a LOT of false information out there about the DS--and this is one of those cases!

It really can be hard to separate out the myth from the fact. In all my time reading these boards, I have only seen two people post about this particular problem. (And one of those posters doesn't actually have a DS, but a configuration that sounds more like a distal RNY.) It is so uncommon, I wouldn't even classify it is a side effect.
I have met dozens of DSers in person, not one of them stank. I do not smell and I interact closely with people all day as part of my job.
I will be honest with you, the only side effect I've personally had since my DS is a problem with constipation. This is probably due to the number of supplements I take. My being too lax about treating it (not being aggressive enough with taking stool softeners and other remedies like magnesium oxide) led to two anal fissures, which have mostly calmed down but will still act up if I forget a dose of stool softener.
Not a big deal, and well worth all the other benefits I've experienced.
