Back in the Saddle--but I can't eat. Please help.
I had post-op bleeding out complication which left me vomiting and nauseous because of the blood going down my throat from my nose and sitting in my stomach, etc. So on my last day in the hospital, it was the first time I kept down anything and I got released. I came home and had to take my nausea meds and prilosec. It wasn't an option. I have had many days where it felt like I was making progress and then I'd vomit everything I'd worked so hard to get down. I had to keep on moving forward, as frustrating as it was.
Also, I cannot take but one type of anti-nausea med and a very low dose of it works wonders. Speak to your doctor if you aren't willing to take the med he gave you and ask for a different one. I had WW3 with one of my nurses in the hospital as I refused Zofran and Reglan. I understand she was doing her job, but I have to advocate for myself and only I know how horrific of a reaction I have to anti-nausea meds.

On the chance you don't know this, peppermint tea or ginger tea is great for nausea. Give it a try.

I am exactly 3 months out and still have not managed to drink a protein shake I cant get past the smell. The NUT told me to put them in sippie type cups so I dont necessarily smell them as I drink them but I still cant do it. Dont stress about the water retention just yet I had gained nearly 15 pounds in the hospital I assume from all the bags after bags of IV fluid. I lost it all the following week. Also be careful with saltine type crackers the white flour can do you in.
I dealt with the nausea and vomiting for about 5 months after surgery i was in the hospital for a whole month after surgery since I was unable to keep even a sip of water down. I was put on every nausea med under the sun I would recommend the patch that you put behind your ear and also there is a nausea pill that will dissolve under your tong if you need the name of them I can look them up for you. I would defiantly recommend a schedule though because if you stop and have a lapse your nausea can come back and then things can go down hill fast. Also make sure you are not dehydrated that will make you very nauseous also I had to get fluids for a month and finally had to do tpn I believe is what it is called it was nutrition through an iv since I was also unable to eat wtih all of the problems. It did all work it self out thought at about 6 or 7 months out i was able to start eating with out a lot of throwing up. I still do occasionally but that is very rare. good luck hope this helped at all.

You guys all rock--THANK YOU! I took y'all's advice and had a good day and night.
Yesterday I ate Harvarti cheese w/Keebler saltines (buttery!), egg drop soup, and applesauce throughout the day. I didn't vomit at all. I realized that I had not taken my Zolfran, so yes, I was hurling! I took it and felt better. I ended up taking the Zolfran three times and the Prilosec twice. I took a Prilosec right before bed and I had no nausea or gas throughout the night. I also took some sips of water throughout the night when I woke up, just to push a bit more fluid through.
I will add the warm teas to the list---right now they sound delicious!
