I'm having my first colonoscopy due to abdominal pain and rectal pain with bleeding. I'm a little nervous and was wondering if my reconfigured innards will come into play during his exam. Does the doctor have to take special care during the exam?
Thanks for your help

Nope, he won't come close to your cut and paste work.

My understanding is that our colons are untouched and therefore it has no implications. But to be certain, I'd suggest calling Dr. G.'s office and asking about it. Better yet, could you have him do the exam?

The switcheroo goes on about 100cm upstream of your colon...nowhere the camera goes.

The only way it will come into play is probably during prep.  I had a little bit of difficulty "cleaning out" and I have heard other DSers have had similar problems.  I had eaten very lightly for several days leading up to the exam, low fiber diet for about 4-5 days, did clear liquids for 24 hours, 2 or 3 dulcolax laxatives, the entire gallon of electrolyte prep (nulytely), and 2 whole bottles of magnesium citrate, and THEN an enema the morning of the exam.  I still had sediment.

'Course...the reason I had the colonoscopy was for slow, sluggish, lazy colon, and that definitely could have contributed.  You could have no problems at all.

My GI was, however, able to successfully see what he needed to see during the exam with no problems.

Don't fret.  I'd just make sure you follow your prep instructions perfectly to get the best results from the clean-out.

I have had a colonoscopy since my DS with no problems what so ever! You should be just fine.. But like Elizabeth said you could call Dr G to ease your mind...

Ditto on the cleaning out.  For some reason many of us don't!  No problems as far as the plumbing and the colonoscopy.  I also had and endoscopy that went fine.

Colonoscopy and endoscope went fine, clean out worked for me. Didn't have a problem was like 1 1/2 yrs postoperative at time.
Good luck, clear liquid diet for a couple days. No milk products or anything with red, green, blue dyes in it.

I agree with what Kayla and the others are saying...I had trouble with the cleaning out, even though I did what I was supposed to, and it appeared all was going well the night before the procedure.

I woke up thinking it was all over, then the nurse came in and said the doctor couldn't finish because there was "too much left up in there."  They were able to get me an appointment for a barium enema at the hospital down the street from the surgery center, only it was three hours later so I still couldn't eat.

No problem, my sister-in-law and I went to the mall - got the test done and results came in a few days later.  All was good.

I am sure you're going to be fine.  Good luck.
