Help-my body seems to be giving off a "smell"
I know this has been discussed before and I have read them but I don't recall getting anywhere so here I am to ask again, bare with me.
Today is about the fourth time my boss has come to me about what we thought was my breathe. I have increased my fluids. I brush my teeth often. I use mouthwash and lots of gums. Nothing has seemed to work and she called me in her office again today because other staff are complaining to her about this "smell". I am mordified!!!! I don't know what this is and so I can't fix it. I am starting to believe that it is not my breathe and I don't believe it is ketosis as I have purchased the strips and I am not in ketosis.
My boss says that you can smell this horrible smell even when my mouth is closed so I am thinking it is a smell being emitted from my skin. I know this has to be surgery related as I have never had anything like this before. And, yes, I do bathe daily and have good hygiene. That is why this is so mordifying!!!
The worst part is, not knowing what this is or how to get rid of it. I brought it up to my doctor and he just said "eat a couple of crackers, it will take you out of ketosis". He also said, "well, if it is any concelation I don't smell anything". He didn't do anything about it and I just continued on trying to be dilegent about my oral care and increasing my fluids.
I am wondering if this could be related to iron absorption? Any thoughts? I am desperate to figure this out so if anyone has ANY ideas, this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Lori

There was a post about this recently (within the past 2 weeks) I'll try to find it. There a couple of other things that can cause odor besides ketosis, one was not enough protein actually. Let me head off to the crappy search function & see what I can find out.
ETA: Here's the thread: http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/DS/4145245/A-good-reason-t o-get-enough-FLUIDS/#33869463
It's got a list of things that can cause different odors from eating choices...

I have no ideas, but Lori I wanted to stop in and give you support. I can not imagine how hard this has to be. I am very sorry. I am sure it is an easy fix once you get it figured out. I wish I were there to really give you a hug, however just know I am feeling for you.
quick question, you say you asked your DR. Do you mean Surgeon or PCP? Good luck

Hi, have you tried taking chlorophyll everyday? It is available in any vitamin section and seems to help with poo odors---so perhaps it would also help with skin/? odors. Just a thought.

I know this is going to sound pretty simplistic but have you changed any of your soaps or cosmetics? Prior to his DS my husband used a liquid shower gel that smelled pretty good. After his surgery -- it was awful. I got him using dial soap and problem solved. Also when he was early out from surgery I noticed his breath was bad -- the GI doc said it was from reflux and as such Tums would do him more good than breath mints.
But what you may have to do is eliminate everything from your diet -- think clear liquids and if the problem goes away then you know it is something you are eating or drinking. If the problem does not go away then do the same thing with supplements and protein drinks and such. If the problem goes away - you know it is something you have been taking. Then just add one thing back at a time till you hit on what the culprit is. But the trick is to do this slowly and methodically. And take notes.

Thanks for your reply. Believe me simplistic or not I am up for any advice! However, I have not changed any thing lately. WIth my diet I am pretty basic and keep it simple right now because I am still trying to get the wt off and I don't want the unpleasant side effects. My typical days meals go like this:
breakfast: Usually an omelet made with chz, few onions and g.p, mushrooms and ham
Lunch: Beef, pork or chicken
Dinner: Turkey, beef roast, pork roast, chicken or maybe another omelet
I will have a snack between lunch and dinner of usually two hard boiled eggs
So my diet is pretty boring right now as I try to get this wt off.
Thanks for your input,
Lori
