Surgery Clearance - with NO PCP!!???

I just got off the phone with Dr.K's office and Lupe informed me that along with the other pre-op tests that I need to have done here in FL I would also need a Surgery Clearance from my PCP.  Well, problem is, I don't have a PCP.

I use to have one but she moved away on me and I never get sick so there has been no need.  I would just go and get my blood drawn on my own in the past to see my labsfor a vitamin deficiency.

I have found a PCP and have an appointment next Wednesday to have an overall health physical and to get the pre-op chest x-ray, EKG, and labs requested from her.  What worries me is the surgery clearance.

What do you think the chances are of a brand new Dr who has never seen me before give me clearance for my surgery???  I don't want to have to wait to long as I really want my DS done in May as the summer months are just to difficult to get time off on my job,

Anyone else experience this? If so, what did you do?

Thanks!

Do you have any doctors that you may have used in the past that you could use? If your getting a physical I don't see a problem with getting surgery clearance as well.

Getting a clearance for sugery from a PCP isn't the same as asking him to approve of the type of surgery you are getting.  You just need him to check to make sure you are healthy enough for a surgery.

I too didn't have a PCP as mine went conceirge in December. I got a letter from my Rheumotogist and my doc said that was fine. I would just be honest with your new PCP and tell them what you need. You never know unless you ask.

Can you get, or do you have any of your old medical records? If you are able to provide them to the new PCP, they may be willing along with this physical to go ahead and write one.

Thank you all for the great suggestions.  My thinking was that the surgery clearance was the Dr basically saying he/she agreed that I was surgery ready and had no issues with me getting the DS.  I guess that's not it, huh? LOL

I do not have any old records to give the new one as when my previous PCP left she didn't even leave a forwarding address or notify her patient - unbelievable right?  So I have no way of knowiing where those records even are.

I plan on being honest with her when I see her next week and that I want to build a relationship with her so that I can come to her for when I need my labwork or have any other issues.  Hopefully she will be willing to give me the clearance.

I will let you all know- keep your fingers crossed for me!

Is her old office still open with the other doctors etc? They are required by law (at least in Nebraska) to keep your records for 25 years so call and ask them for them. They may charge but they have to give them to you.

My surgeon did not want a surgery clearance from a pcp.  What he wanted was a letter from my pcp saying she would provide "all non-surgical post-op follow-up."  Maybe something like that would suffice?  My surgeon wanted all the tests sent to him so he could decide if I was clear for surgery.

Nope, surgery clearance isn't approval for your surgery. It is usually done within a week of surgery, and it's a clearance that you are free from any cardiovascular problems that would make surgery dangerous. But you will need your PCP to order your lab goodies, etc.

I met my new PCP a few weeks before my DS. I brought him everything, my approval, gave him my history, and he rocked. Ordered all my labwork & prescriptions, gave me the clearance, sent me home with copies of all my stuff. He's a keeper.
