Colonoscopy - Very Worried
I went to the doctor tonight for some unrelated issues - before I knew it, I was having an exam that detected blood in my stool. This was news to me, because I have NEVER noticed this on toilet paper or in the toilet itself.
Is blood in the stool a common occurrence in DS patients? I don't remember ever reading this was a major issue. She immediately seemed concerned; although I must say she seemed quite unfamiliar with the DS surgery when I got there today. We moved to this area about eight months ago; this is my first well-visit/ with this doctor. I had seen her before for cellulitis in one of my ankles.
She is scheduling a colonoscopy on an almost-emergency basis. They are going to call me tomorrow and it's supposedly being scheduled for Monday sometime.
My question is this - how worried should I be? Concerned, but not frantic? Or can I just chalk most of this up to her being a good, prudent doctor who might be overly concerned and not familiar with our type of surgery?
Please - any help you can send my way would be great. My mind's wandering and worrying so much right now. Both of my parents died of cancer, and of course I have that in the (not so) back of my mind.
Thanks,
Lisa

Hi Lisa,
Good to see you, but sorry to hear this. Have you contacted Dr. B to get his take on this? How far are you now from this area?
I hope it's just a big nothing, so keep us posted. I miss seeing you and your sister!
Take it easy, and good luck!

Hi Lisa,
I am near Scranton now, so not TOO far away.
I haven't called Dr. B yet, this literally happened not even two hours ago, I only got home here after 7 pm.
I am just worried, that's all. The dr. here is REALLY nice but very unaware of the DS surgery.
I'm worried too because of what happened recently with my sister. She almost died three weeks ago, from a ruptured ectopic pregnancy that had attached to her uterus, the outside...she hemorraged, had emergency surgery, lost half of the blood in her body. The doctors kept telling her, and keep telling us that she is lucky to be alive.
I haven't said a word to her about me, I don't want to worry her at all after what she's been through.
How have you been? How's your sister? I miss all of you too. Will be in the area more again, once the weather breaks...for good. I have had enough of snow.

Well, you're in luck. Dr. William Peters is in Scranton. Perhaps he can offer an opinion?
I don't know about blood in the stool being common for DS, but perhaps there's a fissue to be dealt with or something.

We're in the middle of alot of insurance issues right now - our coverage began and was effective January 1, 2010 - and we still don't have ID cards.
Moving out of Bucks Co. here hasn't been without challenges - never needed a doctor here until now, can't get a regular physician without a whole bunch of steps, a major hassle.
Dr. Peters - is he affiliated in anyway with Mercy Hospital? I think that's the place that the dr. at Medical Express wants me to go to - I'm open to anything.
