Goal weight

Dr. CIrangle gave me a range. He said between 130-150 pounds would be good.

My own goal is 135 pounds. I've never been a healthy adult weight so I have no idea what it'll be like or what looks good on me.

I will be pretty damn tiny at that weight but I want to get there and evaluate.

I'm 4 pounds away from one goal which is onerderland. And then another 25 pounds away from my lowest adult weight of 175 pounds.

I'm excited!

Well I think officially I heard normal BMI (159 for my height), my PCP said 170 would be great. At 170 the NP at my surgeons office said I looked great and could be done. I keep 140 in the back of my mind but 150 would be great too. I don't try too hard right now and will see where I end up. I am really working to get my mind around a clothing size as a goal. And that goal would be an 8 and I seem to be there pretty much. With some plastics I could easily be a 6 I think.

I'll be having this discussion with my PCP again next week.

goal weight
that is a controversial one for many

straight BMI, short changes those who exercise faithfully as it is based soley on weight to height. So a very fit muscular person will be a smaller fitter size but can be high end of normal range or even higher and be in better shape than an unfit person of a lower weight same height.

age- as your age goes up your BMI ideal range increases as well.

We tend many times here to forget that as we lose weight we retain the extra skin, connective tissue and extra blood vessels that supported all our morbid obesity. My surgeon and plastic surgeon from their experience felt that for every 100% we wanted to lose we would keep 6-8% of this excess skin, connective tissue, deflated fat cells. IF you were super morbidly obese the % of excess kept was even higher at 8-12%. For this reason my plastic surgeon did not want me to get below a BMI of 23 before surgery. This is why the statistics usually show wls losses that are 60-80% of excess. You are not expected to lose 100% of the excess, you will have excess left.

There is health risks for women especially if our BMI gets too low. Our menstrual cycles are dependant on a certain level of fat. This is why anorexics loose their periods when they get too low. There are some people with body dysmorphism that can not see that they do not look healthy at a very low BMI. The thrill of seeing the numbers go lower overwhelms the mind and they get a mindset that you would not be able to differentiate from the anorexics I have treated.

For me personally I am much happier with how I look and feel with a BMI between 25-27, mine was after the second rounds of plastics down in the 22 range and I looked gaunt, had no ass and no boobs ( I actually had to get falsies to wear in my bra as I was very very flat chested). I had little muscle mass as I had not been able to work out.  Having breast implants was not an option for me, then or now so I am thrilled the girls have filled back out. I am strong and healthy looking now. I have a weight I have maintained for over 5 years and I am loving my DS.

My surgeon does not give an absolute goal weight. He lets you know what the average weight loss for the DS is 60-80%  of EWL, with the BMI 25 being the  weight to acheive, and gives you that as a goal range. I was lucky and made it much lower than that. However I would of been thrilled to make it to the 60%
I started at 342lbs BMI 5' 8 1/2inch is 166lbs so my EWL was 176lbs,
60% loss would of been a final weight of 237lbs
80% loss would of been a final weight of 199lbs
I lost down to below goal - 108%loss
now maintain at 90% of excess and a weight of 182lbs my height increased 1/2 inch and my BMI is 27.

long winded- to sum it up, have the DS acheive your best with eating right, exercise and taking care of your mental and spiritual needs and your body will find a weight you can maintain and hopefully love as well.
Gratitude is my attitude

What a great job you have done! I forgot about the excess flab and stuff like that. I'll have to remember that if I do get to 140 that maybe 25 lbs of that is excess skin hanging around. LOL.

I had no weight goals and still don't. All of my goals had to do with health issues. I LOVED seeing 199 on the scale, but other than that, the weight stuff is pretty meaningless to me. You could have knocked me over with a feather when I reached the normal BMI range--but that was not a goal. To me, numbers on a scale are an artificial measure of....well, nothing.

I celebrated getting off insulin, oxygen, various other meds as they dropped away. I rejoiced when I could get up and DANCE at a party, when I could climb stairs without worrying about passing out, when I could walk as far as I wanted without worrying about stressing my heart. I crowed when I could plant bulbs in my garden, when I could kneel and stand up again.....Those are measures of real progress to me.

Yes, those are wonderful measures of success. Thank you for reminding me of them too. I think I will be happy once again when I can cross my legs and get back into all of my smaller clothes and crab about having to have them taken in because they are too small!

My goal was simply a number under the normal BMI on the chart.

I picked a weight to give me a normal BMI.  Nothing more or less complicated than that.
