Goal weight

I personally picked my goal weight by figuring what my weight would have to be to have a healthy BMI in the middle of the range for normal body weight. So a normal BMI is between 18.5-24.9 so I believe I am just between those to allow for some extra room. At 150lbs I would have a BMI of 23.5 which allows for a few pounds of play. That's how I figured my goal weight.

My GW was 140lbs, but my doc suggested 167lbs because that's the number at which "your weight no longer a negative factor on your health."  She had some calculation to determine it, I think it was a combo of the BMI and other risk factors for heart disease etc.  I guess it's the upper end of "normal" and everything under that is gravy!  I've been bouncing b/w 174-177lbs for the past month and feel really good.  If I really scrutinize my body, the only thing that bothers me now is some loose skin, and not bad enough to have plastics....yet!

Hi! My doctor's goal is between 162 to 171 pounds. I didn't like that goal as I thought it was too heavy for me.

My personal goal WAS 135, but I increased it to 140. It was the weight I was when I went into the Navy at 19 years old (well, I was 139,but who's counting?). So, it might be unrealistic. I don't know. I may have to reevaluate my goal as I get closer to it. Personally, I know I would be absolutely thrilled if I were to reach 150 and stay there.

I picked my number based on what the Army told me I should weigh when I was 20!  When I enlisted, the Army said I weighed five pounds too much and I went through basic training on a thousand calorie diet.  Man, was that tough.  But in spite of the diet and all of the PT (physical training) I never did lose that five pounds!  My surgeon never gave me a goal.  But I know that he used the number on the Metropolitan Life Table to figure my excess weight.  According to that I should have weighed 131, but both he and I agree that is way too low for me.  Last week when my DH went in for a consult they used the Met Life table to get his excess weight and then said he should lose 75 - 80% of that and gave him a target based on that 75-80%.

My surgeon took into account my age (44), my bone structure (linebacker/huge), my thyroid disease, my highest weight, my lowest weight from traditional dieting (I think I gained in the parking lot after the WW meeting!) and then gave me a range to shoot for.  I started at my highest 385, surgery weight was 329, lowest traditional weight was 240 (thanks optifamine) and then based on BMI scales (which he said were bogus for my bone structure and excess skin, so don't sweat the small stuff) came up with a healthy range of 185-205.  I'm 6'2 and have been bouncing around between 185-195 for the past year.  Lowest was 175 and I looked like a cancer patient.  I'm a comfortable 10-12 and satisfied with my appearance. (Never thought I'd say that in this lifetime!)

I can't seem to wrap my head around the fact that after this surgery, I could potentially get to 135-140lbs again.  I haven't been that weight since I was a freshman in high school!  It seems so bizarre to consider that a possibility.  I was reading some old medical records from 1998 and my doc said that at my height, my ideal weight would be something like 118-125lbs.  THAT seems positively skeletal to me!  I'd be happy with 170-175.

But based on normal BMI, I guess my ultimate dream goal would be about 135, give or take.  Here's hoping, right?

I know how you feel!  I weighed 170-180 in 10th/11th grade. Everyone would say "you have such a pretty face. If only you would lose weight."  Funny thing was that I was 5'5" then, like I am now. I look at pictures of when I weighed 170 and think how damned thin I look! So I should be happy at that weight right? But a big part of me cannot get that dream goal weight of 125 out of my head. I KNOW I'd look terrible at that weight, given that I have a large bone frame, but a part of me still wants it.

I was a Weigh****cher member for many years so I chose my goal weight from there.  I reached 135 pounds, which was the weight they set for me, but at 66 years old I was not happy with that weight.  I felt like it was too thin.  Over the last year, I have added 10 pounds and I am much happier with the way I look now.  I think mostly it is a personal preference.  We all know at what weight we feel and look our best and so I think that should be the deciding factor.  If you have been MO as long as I was (42 years) you may have to feel your way as you go.  Good Luck on your weight loss journey.

I have lots of goal weights. LOL

The first one, One-derland, I reached yesterday. Woohoo!!

The next one, my surgeon's goal is 171. That's at some percentage (I can't remember what) of EWL that he expects people to acheive.

The next one is the weight that will put me at a normal BMI and that's 154. That's what's on my ticker, and I consider that my official "goal".

Then I have my dream weight of 135. That's where I remember being the happiest with myself in the past. But I was only a larvae at the time, so that may not be a realistic goal for me at 45.

So it's all up to you. Some surgeons set goals, some don't, but ultimately it's what makes you happy and healthy.

my surgeon didn't give me a goal weight, but i have several of my own.

at 170, i'd be content.  at 150, i'd be thrilled.  a normal BMI is my real goal.  and then i have a super secret goal of the low end of the BMI scale (but still normal), only because i'm counting on a bit of bounce back.

i suppose there are non scale goals along the way too.  fitting into old jeans,  matching my driver's license weight, 'onederland' etc...  i also bought a pair of goal pants.
