OK so, today I decided to scoot over to Wendy's on my long lunch and grab a baconator. I ate all the bacon and one patty. Im thinking hmmm high protein great! Now I know everyone on here says fats are OK. But one of my friends is like " I cant believe you went through the whole surgery and your eatting that!" I said its high in PROTEIN she said its also HIGH in FAT. Some please remind me. Fat is supposed to be ok cuz we malabsorb most of it right? She says OH " YOU WONT ALWAYS MALABSORB, you should try to establish better eatting habbits" Am I nutz or is she just ignorant?
Edited to add info: she is not a WLS patient. Also, I did the math. The baconator has 56gr protein and 51 gr fat but if I malabsorb fat thats about 10gr fat that Im actually getting...

I used to make excuses why I cant Now I make reasons why I CAN!!

She's ignorant. RNYers have to worry about fat, not DSers (unless you get slicks or something from it). Your gut isn't going to absorb fat any better 5 years out, because the part that absorbs fat, most of the small intestine, is no longer exposed to food. No amount of healing from surgery will change that basic fact. That's why DSers usually have great cholesterol levels.
So, my suggestion is to tell her NANNY NANNY BOO BOO, and grin wickedly!

With great power (the DS!) comes great responsibility.

Yeah, what Jenn said!  Ha ha!  I've also addressed some people's ingnorance by saying that I pretty much follow the atkins diet and the only thing I need to watch is carbs and sugar, not fat.  That shuts em up.

Why would you even consider what she has to say.  People who have not had this surgery or done a great deal of research on it have no idea what we should or should not be doing.  Just do the nut thing -- and smile and nod.

She is uniformed.  It's hard for people to understand our new physiology.  My husband still shakes his head at what I eat.  He can't believe that I don't gain eating fat.

Eventually, you will probably absorb more, but never the amount of someone who didn't have the DS.  My surgeon said that the intestines try to make up for the loss of length and become a little more efficient at absorbing.  However, one reason we are able to maintain the loss long-term is because we will never absorb to the extent we did before surgery.

You are right about the baconator.  You only got about 10 grams of fat from that sandwich.

Hang in there.  Remember, most people will never understand.

Why is she even questioning you?  Look at how great you are doing!  Nevermind her and do what works for you.

Just smile and nod and tell her that you and your doctor have a handle on it.  Oh, and let her know that when the position of Food Police opens up you'll let her know right away.

When you are at your goal and still munching on baconators as you please, I bet she'll sing another tune!  Don't let her bug ya.

You can't get people involved in your WL because they can get real annoying after awhile.  Tell her the subject of what you eat or your WL is not up for discussion.  Just continue to do what you need to do.  You know what surgery you had and you know what you can and shouldn't eat.  I hear the baconator is a great selection for the DS  - enjoy many more!!!

I say adapt Buckeye Sylvia's saying, "I lost 66 pounds eating Wendy's Baconators!"  :)

My fiance has become a believer watching what I eat, and seeing that it doesn't not affect my body.  I am doing fine maintaining and I pour on the fat any way I can.

It does get annoying hearing some of the comments from supposed "well intended" people.
Diets don't work, the DS DOES!
