Anna

It will get better. I went through that phase and feel like I am just coming out of it (cautiously)
I am not able to tolerate any lactose, so protien drinks are out. I have been able to eat soy but the soy shakes I have tried are nasty. The other day I was able to eat eggs again - I ordered Joes Special from the cheesecake factory (I do not konw why I am able to eat most anything frome there!!! I think it is a stomach conspiracy!!) It had scrambled eggs crumbled spicy chicke sausage, spinach, mushrooms and onions. I reheated it and added butter and shredded cheese Wow that was good. I had it for 2 days (they have huge portions!!)

Beans have been my savior. Beans and soup. I make my own soup and will only put in things I can tolerate. It gets better. I have been averse to food for about the last 2 months and I am just able start new things. Do something to make yourself keep something in your stomach even if it is just soup becaue if you go to long without eating the nausea kicks in and you feel even less like eating.

I will make tuna salad, or that fake crab salad and add the dreamfields rotelle pasta to it.

Good luck honey

Jacqui

Thanks Anna for posting this. You are not alone in these feelings.

I finally found something that I truly enjoyed eating last Saturday--crab legs dipped in lots of drawn butter. Maybe because I never ate this pre-op and had no pre-set flavor idea, I could just enjoy them as they were. I experienced enjoying the act eating again--so much so I am going back this Saturday for more crab legs.

This week, I have incorporated more protean sources that were not my usual fare and that has seemed to restart my ability to eat. I know you were looking for non-meat ideas, but I have to add that those coke slow-cooker ribs were so moist and flavorful that I had no problems eating them. Yet, they were not so overpowering that they shut down my taste buds.

I am going to make salmon patties--from canned wild caught salmon- -in a few nights and top them with mayo mixed with adobo sauce/chipotle. I would be happy to share the recipe after  work it all out. Basically it will be:
canned salmon
green onions; chopped
poblano peppers; chopped fine
eggs
low carb bread; torn-up and soaked in heavy cream (use this instead of bread crumbs)
mayo
then pan fried in peanut oil

Something else I have made that went down easily and has good protean/fiber for the carbs is Morning Star Black Bean Burgers
the last few minutes in the oven I add some colby-jack cheese
then I put it on a plate and top it with chipotle mayo mixture, 1/4 C guacamole, and 1 thick slice bacon. I can only eat half of it at a time and do not miss the bun--14+grams of protein in just half/10.3 total carbs--most of which is fiber

I think part of this is just the adjustment period that some of us go through. I tell myself everyday that I will really start loving my DS any day now. In just a short while, this period will be just a faint memory--a mere bump on the road to our success.

You are doing great and I am so proud of all you have accomplished in such a short time.

Something else to try is "hiding" your meat (no dirty minds here please).  I use BBQ sauce, holladaise sauce, gravy, etc.  I go to KFC all the time just to buy a large gravy.  And you can actually go to TGI Friday's and buy the Jack Daniels BBQ sauce (tastes WAY better than the bottled stuff).   Ranch or blue cheese dressing on chicken.  Lots of mayo in egg salad, tuna salad, etc.  Pulled pork.  At 3 years out, sometimes I can sit and eat a plain grilled ribeye and be in heaven, other times, ICK!  But top with some holladaise and yum.  Also, cottage cheese is REALLY high in protein.  I can tell you that, even now, if I go for a long period of time without eating, like my plane ride home from Miami which was delayed 3 hours, I end up with a very unhappy belly and then eating gets tough.  Hope you this helps!

Oh. My. Gawd... I did (do) that too. Way back at the beginning, my doctor told me I would have food aversions as I went through the DS weight loss process. And he advised me to treat my protein like medicine. Just do it. Hold your nose and do it.

But... like a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down, a spoonful of 'gravy' helps the protein go down. I over mayo'ed the protein salads, over gravy'ed the steak, over BBQ'ed the pork chops, and over ****tail'ed the shrimps.

And a spoon of peanut butter really does go do well in a pinch.....

I always love it when someone writes a post like this because it reminds me of all the wonderful options there are for protein that I forget about!

I just want to add two words: sausage gravy. It has become my new religious experience, I tell ya. ETA: I warmed up some store-bought meatballs with a jar of alfredo sauce over whole wheat angel hair pasta for supper tonight, and it was goooooood.

Anna, I have gone through the food-hatin' phase a couple of times since surgery. I keep shakes on hand for those times, plus a big jar of crunchy peanut butter!
