Considering DS

Hi Lisa, I’m fighting my insurance company for the DS, once I get approval I’m looking at Dr. Spaw in Nashville, Tn. He’s just one state over from you. My BMI is around 69 not sure if he requires weight loss or anything yet. I just know he’s the only Doctor that does the DS in Nashville. I do wish you the best of luck in finding the surgeon that works for you.

I think he’s doing consultations in Nashville but he’s doing the actual surgeries still in California …. If I understand right. ????  Not 100% sure.

Dr John Rabkin is the only surgeon at Pac Lap. Dr Robert Rabkin retired, Dr Husted went home to Nashville and there are two PAs, Jennifer and Dana. Myra went back to school full time.

Lisa, I am so glad you came over from the BMI over 50 board. You will be getting some great advice. Please feel free to read my profile from May and June where I write on the reasons I decided that the DS was right for me.

"So, any advice, etc...is needed and appreciated".

I would highly recommend that you look for Anne S's profile. Not only does she have GREAT information on the DS there, but she too was a very high BMI to start with. She had her DS on July 31st, and at her last weigh-in (almost a month ago), she'd lost 75 lbs, and her BMI is now under 60.

She would be a great person for you to talk to as she did a lot of research on which surgeons will handle patients with high BMIs.

Hi Lisa Oh, you ARE a pretty girl - love your avatar. With your BMI, I really don't think the gastric sleeve will cut it for you.    You will need the additional malabsorption offered by the DS.   You're going to need to be really proactive about your nutritional needs if you have the DS.   You will need to stay up on current knowledge, but with boards like this, it's not difficult, as long as you are committed to this surgery and its requirements.   I was considered a "light weight," and the DS has worked really well for me.    One person you might want to contact is Kalaani.   She started out with a higher BMI and looks FANTASTIC.    Dina M. is another such member.

LISA!!!!! I was going to suggest a DS to you over on the VSG board. That was my first choice in surgeries,  but due to my kidneys,  I only had the first stage done. Personally,  I think a DS would be perfect for you,  but due to your BMI,  surgeons might want to do it in stages anyway.. I love my Dr,  there seems to be a lot of surgeons who do the DS in Ohio.  I chose him to do my DS,  and I love the hospital,  small and homey,  and where the DS was pioneered,  the staff is used to dealing with MO and SSMO patients,  so you are the norm to them, not the "fat chick" you know?   If you decide to come up here,  you can stay with me,  and I'm serious about it. This is a great board for information. I'm so glad that you're still looking into your options,  and not giving up.

Hi Lisa! I'm the gal BlackThorne was telling you about...and viola! Here I am. I had the DS by Dr. Dennis C. Smith in Marietta, GA (close to Atlanta). He's the only surgeon I found (aside from Dr. John Rabkin) who would do the DS all-in-one-go for me laparoscopically.  Dr. Gagner and Dr. Prachand would do the Gastric Sleeve on me first, and in a year (or after a significant weight loss), they'd do the intestinal "switch" for me. I prefered to "go under" only once if I could help it, and Dr. Smith said he saw no reason why I needed to have it done in two steps. I had surgery at BMI = 70. On my profile, you'll see a few things that will hopefully allow you to make a well-informed decision regarding which way you'd like to proceed, and which way is best for you. I'm not trying to influence your decision, I'd simply like you to have information to make your own choice. If you have any questions, please let me know.  ~anne s.
