Hi PD, Thanks for asking these great questions - it really helps preops and others understand what life is really like as a postop.   1. do you have diarrhea or loose watery stool? Not anymore. I did have diarrhea the first two weeks out from surgery since I was taking in Splenda and other artifically sweetened things. Plus whey products. Turns out the protein shakes I purchased were mostly whey-based, and I became lactose intolerant after surgery. Whey is derived from milk, and caused me all sorts of trouble, but NOT ANYMORE! YAY! 2. do you go 4-6 times even more a day? I use the toilet for a daily deposit twice a day. I've had some days where I'll go, wipe, get up, and within a few minutes, feel the need to go again. No big deal. 3. do you pass gas all day long? I pass gas less frequently now than prior to surgery. It's related to what I eat. If I eat refried beans, then I'll toot a few hours later. Same goes for cabbage-family vegetables. 4. is your fart or bowel movement so offensive that it lingers on you 5 mins AFTER occurence? The bowel movement does not linger on me at all. The smell of one does linger in the bathroom, though. I have two air-fresheners. One is a plug-in, that's constantly releasing some really nice tropical smells, and the other is for when I just had a bm (Fabreeze). Takes care of it just fine. 5. do you have body odor that is due to having DS? No. 6. do you suffer from pain or bloating? Pain? No. Bloating? Sometimes, when I have gas from (as I said previously) eating cabbage-family veggies or refried beans. 7. do you have hair loss that was consider alot? Not yet. 8. do you have intolerance or get sick eating any type of food? I am now Lactose Intolerant. I take Lactaid tablets if/when I choose to drink whey or milk products. No problem. I do not get sick from eating any type of food so far. I'm still in the experimental stages, however, and I'm staying far away from white bread and rice. 9. do  you wear diapers? No. 10. do you have any intestinal problems or other complications since having DS? No. 11. what is one thing you have daily to eat or drink? Water. Water. Water. Protein. Protein. Protein. 12. what are things you are able to eat? Nothing has disagreed with me so far. I've had watermelon, egg foo yung, oyster sauce beef, Chinese vegetables, hot dogs (no bun), sunflower seeds, cheese, Mexican, a little Italian, all sorts of foods, but remaining in the high protein sector. 13. is there anything you are unable to eat or tolerate regarding food? Mentioned previously - lactose intolerance. 14. how much protein are you required to take? At two months out next Monday, I believe I'll still be on the 60g/day requirement, but I'm well above that most days. Most days I get in over 100g. 15. what are some things you take/eat to get in your daily protein intake? Chicken, fish, cheese, sunflower seeds, nuts, ground beef, eggs, bacon, sausage, pork, anything, really. 16. what vitamins and supplement do you take on a daily basis? 2 multi's, Calcium Citrate, dry A, dry D 17. are you able to eat and drink with your meals? I prefer drinking between meals. Sipping throughout the day works best for me. However, yes, I do drink with meals if I feel like it. 18. what is a typical menu for a day or post what you ate yesterday/today? Cheese, meats, mashed potato, veggies. 19. has your personality or preceptions of things changed since you had surgery? Not yet. 20. what are some things you can say that having DS helped you with your health and life? I no longer walk with a cane. I no longer take any sort of high blood pressure medications. I no longer take any sort of arthritis medications (so far so good). I have renewed faith that my life is going somewhere, and that I'll be able to pay it forward in many ways.

I noticed something while reading the responses.  Most of the lactose intolerant people were less than a year out.  Please don't take this as gospel, but many will regain lactose tolerance after a year.  Again, it's not all --- but my surgeon's nutrit. told me most do and I've found that to be true as well (I was never lactose intolerant till after the DS.  It lasted for a year and then went).  So, again, I'm not saying it'll happen for all, but those less than a year out, keep an eye on it.  At a year or so, you may be able to ease back into those lactose foods.  Good luck!

1. do you have diarrhea or loose watery stool? Only for the first couple of weeks post-op (water in, water out).  Since then it is generally, formed, but soft.
2. do you go 4-6 times even more a day? I poop 1 or 2 times a day, first thing in the AM, in fairly quick succession.  Depending on my fat/volume intake, I may poop again in the evening -- but that is rare. 3. do you pass gas all day long? Probably... but mornings I hardly pass gas at all.  Evenings a little more, but not uncontrollable and certainly NOT more than my non-DS husband!  If I restrict my carb intake I hardly pass any gas.
4. is your fart or bowel movement so offensive that it lingers on you 5 mins AFTER occurence? Um... NO.

5. do you have body odor that is due to having DS? Again... NO. 6. do you suffer from pain or bloating? Twice since my DS 17 months ago.  Once was when I ate lasagna at about 3 months out and again after I ate a Big Mac (bun and all) at about 9 months.  I STILL won't eat a Big Mac -- but lasagna is awesome and doesn't bother me at all.
7. do you have hair loss that was consider alot?
NO. 8. do you have intolerance or get sick eating any type of food? Mostly no.  Some white breads bother me, but not wheat bread. 9. do  you wear diapers? Absolutely NOT. 10. do you have any intestinal problems or other complications since having DS? No complications at all. 11. what is one thing you have daily to eat or drink? My Muscle Milk Mocha Joe protein breakfast drink. 12. what are things you are able to eat? Pretty much anything. 13. is there anything you are unable to eat or tolerate regarding food? Again... not really.  White bread bothers me -- but I can still eat it.  Just makes me a little gassy. 14. how much protein are you required to take? I try to get in 100 grams a day.  I usually make it. 15. what are some things you take/eat to get in your daily protein intake? Muscle Milk for breakfast -- then lots of meat, BBQ ribs, fried chicken, crab, shrimp, salmon.  I usually make my meats with gravy and sauces to help them go down better and they just taste so dang good that way. 16. what vitamins and supplement do you take on a daily basis? Multi vitamin, calcium, iron, Vit C, ADEK. 17. are you able to eat and drink with your meals? Of course. 18. what is a typical menu for a day or post what you ate yesterday/today? Yesterday and today were not typical days for me (lots of running around)... but I'll got ahead and post today:
B - Mocha Joe Muscle Milk w/banana
S - cheese stick,
Zone perfect bar
L - turkey breast lunch meat, jalapenjo pickles (about 4 wraps)
S - cheddar pretzel mixture (about 1 1/2 cups over the course of an hour)
baby bell cheese snack,
granola bar,
NY Cherry Cheesecake Ice Cream (1/2 cup)
D - Lasagna, salad w/balsamic vinegar dressing, garlic bread, New Castle Beer
S - ??? not sure yet... prolly more Ice Cream (Yummy!) and maybe some popcorn
Actually, this probably is typical.

19. has your personality or preceptions of things changed since you had surgery? I don't think so... however, I'm more apt to tell you what I really think... pre-op, I was more likely to keep my opinions to myself.
20. what are some things you can say that having DS helped you with your health and life?
In so many ways.  I'm active with my children.  No longer pre-diabetic, my feet no longer ache 24/4, my back pain that used to be constant is very rare, my cholesterol is better than it has been in 20 years, etc...  Also -- My marriage is better -- I think strong marriages get stronger and weak marriages fall apart.  I don't believe WLS causes divorce.
