Topic: RE: Type 1 and I'm STARVING

Hi all:

I'm so wishing I'd found you before my gastric bypass 6 years ago tomorrow! There was NO ONE that was T1 on here at all. I was doing MDI without pump or CGM, although I use both of those things now. I too had the same fears about going low and not being able to treat it.

First, my endo and surgeon did NOT make me do any kind of special diet before surgery and I was not asked to do any fasting just prior. My medical team knew that it would be particularly hard to manage that with insulin, so fortunately, I did not have to endure that.

Next, my endo and surgeon also agreed that I should cut my insulin and prepare to run a bit higher over the weeks when I could not really eat. I had a glucagon kit around, but never needed it. I found it a bit more challenging to keep my blood sugar in a good range because I was "eating" (well protein shakes) more frequently and that just doesn't work well with insulin administration. But, I did fine. I did not have any hypoglycemia as a result, but I sure did work very closely with my amazing endo in the weeks after surgery.

As I mentioned, tomorrow is 6 years for me. I've done well, considering that I am a T1 and still using insulin. My high blood pressure and high cholesterol vanished. My insulin needs are much less now and I'm in very good health. 31 years as a T1 and no complications - thank goodness....feel great.

I lost almost 100 pounds as result of the surgery in the first year. I had about a 12-15 pound weight rebound, which was completely expected. I'm still at the edge of the obese range, but SO much better off now than prior to surgery.

I wish you all well and would be happy to be resource to anyone who is T1 and has questions. I truly could find NO ONE 6 years ago who was T1 and doing the surgery, so you all inspire me.

Keep the faith...

Terry

Topic: RE: What was your a1c before WLS?

I had the sleeve 5 weeks ago today and my a1c was 10. My surgeon never mentioned it during our conversations other than to suggest that my diabetes would likely disappear along with the weight. I was on two needle insulins up until surgery and have not needed either since the morning of surgery, but I am still on metformin for now.

Good luck to you! One of my main reasons for having the surgery was to control my diabetes and to get healthy as well. I never thought I would be able to have children but I was blessed with my son almost 5 years ago and he is my reason for living!! I am almost 6 months out from surgery and I am back on Metformin for my diabetes. I try not to dwell on the fact that most people don't have to take any meds for it anymore, I just look at like I am doing what I need to do to keep my numbers down. Hopefully I won't be on it for the rest of my life. I'm sure you will do great, just follow your doctors plans!

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 6 years ago. Since then I have been diagnosed with several comorbitidies. About 4 months ago my a1c was 7.3 and was started on lantus insulin at night. My last a1c was 6.8. I meet with my surgeon tomorrow to follow up with my EGD results and surgery date. I have heard from a lot that after surgery they no longer take meds but the longer your diabetic you are less likely to get off the medication. I do have several questions for my surgeon. I'm 28 years old and want to be healthy again and I want to be able to have childeren. (Husband and I have been trying for the last 3 year's) fingers crossed!!!!!!

Hi. It could be that your pancreas may be pooped.

I'm pre-op for the gastric bypass surgery and have been reading all I can find on the topic of diabetes remission and the gastric bypass.

One article states:

We need healthy beta cells - they are made in the pancreas - that can pump out enough insulin to push blood sugar into receptive cells. And over time, people with type 2 diabetes may lose beta cells and the cells they still have may not produce as much insulin.

So, when I have surgery to "get rid of" diabetes I am hopeful but I also know that I have had diabetes for 14 years and my pancreas may just not produce enough beta cells.

What surgery did you have? Did you have to take insulin before your surgery? How long have you had diabetes?

Topic: RE: Type Two and Complications

Hello,

I also have type 2 diabetes, I was diagnosed when I was 21 (16 years ago). I have struggled with it ever since then. I honestly thought that having this surgery was going to make it magically go away as I've heard from so many other people on here and in my support group meetings but unfortunately that is not the case for everyone. My sugars are still really high, and I am almost 5 months post-op.

Thanks for sharing your story. I have noticed that there are never too many posts in the diabetes forums. So does that mean there are not a lot of diabetics on here who have had WLS? Or maybe they are all in "remission" now? I'm not sure.

Good luck to you in your journey. We will beat this!

Topic: Type Two and Complications

I have had to deal with a lot of diabetes complications. Mostly my eyes. I have had to have surgery on my left eye and I think it'll soon be the right eyes turn later this year. I have diabetic retinopathy. Also dental problems(also from diabetes and mental health medications)

For so long I didn't care what I put in my mouth. I was killing myself bite by bite. Over 15 years of uncontrolled numbers. That's a long time to not give a hoot! The year after my grandpa passed I finally started to care. I have had 4 years of solid A1c numbers. Under 7 and even at one point 5.9

The thing that bothers me the most is my teeth. Well, lack there of. Earlier this year I had to get a top denture. There I said it. Those years caught up with me and I was in great pain. I also had to get my partial on the bottom expanded after getting two teeth removed during the upper teeth removal. I was and occasionally am embarrassed! But you know what? Now I can smile and my horrible teeth are gone and the denture looks very natural. It'll look even better when I get my permanents.

Today I'm wanting to eat the house it seems. I know this will pass but it makes me sad that I was such a lonely despondent person back then. Some times reflection is a good thing and sometimes it isn't. Today it is good, for the most part. I see that I have over come a lot.

I WILL beat this thing.

I was scared of the same thing! I have a juice box and a small snack no problems now. The first few months after surgery I was eating so little and was taking very little insulin so had no probkems with lows.

Thanks so much for sharing. I will keep you in mind for sure with questions. I'm really afraid of having a lot of low blood sugars after surgery and not being able to treat them as I normally do by chugging juice down. Have an Endo apt next week and will discuss things with them then.

I had my surgery 5 years ago this August. I would suggest you bring some insulin and needles. I was not on a pump when I had my surgery and I had to fight for a few units of insulin! I was the first type 1 who had the surgery ar my hospital. So many type 2 out there and the hospital staff kept telling me I may not need insulin any more! Really??

I have lost 105 lbs with in the first year and have been maintaining ever since.

Any questions feel free to ask. I am in Canada.
