Topic: RE: Transitioning to a pump
I have been type 1 since I was 3 years of age (I am now 35).  I have brittle diabetics, and was not interested in the pump as I dont like the though of a needle always being inside of me.  I am having RNY surgery next week and hopes that it will help my controls.  I am on 5 shots a day.
Total lantus 58 units, and total humalog 60 units.

I do not have experience with this and haven't read anyone on here who has.  However, I think we have all learned a lot from each other, so I'd be very interested in what you learn?  Please keep us updated and congrats on making it this far in your decision making!

Topic: Insulinoma
I haven't had surgery yet just had my second of three appointments I've lost 7lbs this past month.

Visited my pcp this week my sugar drops a lot even down as low as 40-44....he's worried that I may have insulinoma (tumor on the pancreas that produced too much insulin) -

Anyone have experience with this? He asked me
To come to his office after fasting and wait for it to drop or either he will admit me to the hospital for up to three days.
This has big a big issue I have discussed with my surgeon and nutritionist - after surgery I won't be able to eat much and I eat a lot d carbs now to keep my sugar up. (I lose vision, talk as ifnim drink, and jabber severe migraines when it drops that low)

Topic: RE: Transitioning to a pump
It is a little awkward at first learning to sleep with pump. I attach it to my pajama top in the middle so I can sleep on either side. I am back on pump now for a few days. My daily basal rate is at 0.4 units an hour.  The levemir did not seem to be holding me very well. Now I can bolus my carbs at lot easier. I am somewhat disappointed that my sugars are still up, but I am only 3 weeks out and have a long way to go. I do not want to have to take metformin again. I guess it all depends on my next a1C result. I did use the CGM but it its tricky and another needle to place it. I had problems with securing it and not sweating the darn thing off. It gives great info, so if your insurance covers the supplies, I would try it just for the information it will give you about how your sugars cycle during the day. Keep in mind that it is not a basis for insulin dosages! It only tracks trends.  Your endo can use this information to do pump adjustments if you are getting too many lows or highs on your graph. The carelink print outs are valuable.
Do keep in touch!

Topic: RE: HELP!!! Carb Confused!!!
IMO - the carbs you are eating - will only make things worse for you. Skim milk - maybe the the worse offender, as well as low fat - FF yogurt.

I had RNY and got RH - reactive hypoglycemia and hypoglycemia at times.
But by trial and error - i found out that I do need some carbs - but I mostly need fat and proteins then some carbs. But never "liquid " type carbs (*like milk, or juice or even thin yogurt)
I keep my fat to protein to carb ratio optimum for me.  complex carbs - non -starchy veggies, virtually no fruits, or very limited - low glycemic fruits.

Fat stabilizes my BS - so much better that anything else.
you may want to check this - very interesting...

Topic: RE: Whey protein running up sugar???
I am not diabetic but I am RNY and 4 years post op .
I deal with RH - reactive hypoglycemia.
I can't drink whey - made with water. My BS will get up and then drop. But if I make the same shake with some fat - my BS raises slowly and stays that way.

Some proteins are better than others.
I buy unsweet coconut milk or almond milk (the drinkable type)  and I mix 1/2 cup or  1 cup of that with 1 scoop of protein powder. I like using whey isolate, because it suppose to have less sugar.

Also  - some people may react to Splenda . Even though for most - it is OK - my body may treat that as sugar - not all the time - but some times. Not sure why.
