Topic: RE: X-Post- High Blood Sugar but NOT Diabetic?

I am having the same problems other than the fact that mine will bottom out about an hour or two later. I've been looking at the reactive hypoglycemia websites and it's sort of like that. There's also noninsulinoma pancreatogenous hypoglycemia syndrome (niphs) which is definitely more in my symptom range. You might want to do some research into that and bring it up with your dr. I have an appt this week to discuss this. It's really putting a damper on trying to have a normal every day life! Good luck to you! Hope you feel better!

I have not been officially diagnosed with this problem, but it sounds exactly like what I'm going through. It seems like my bloodsugar spikes to 200-300 after I eat, then drops into the 30's or 40's about an hour or two later. If I take any glucose tabs or try to eat to get it up, it spikes again. I've passed out, gotten the shakes, seizures, headaches, confusion, etc. No matter what I eat, it is always the same...Feel like giving up eating alltogether, but know that I can't. I am at my wits end! I'm not even allowed to drive anymore. It's sucking...

Well...I had every pre-op tests done.  Optifast handed over and it begins October 9th!!!  Time is starting to really fly.  It felt like I had ages and ages to get ready for all this and of course since I had ages to get ready well I did NOTHING!!!

The good news for me is that I'm allowed veggies during Opti...even with a tad of olive oil...so, I can eat soups and salads!!!  I'm no longer fearing the 2 weeks pre-op, actually looking forward to it since I've been really having a long and extended food funeral. (I know, I know.....but I had to do it!!!)

The even better good news is that throughout this process and the 7 months of researching wls, I realized that some people with non obese bmi actually go through with wls surgery to relieve their diabetes. My husband has had diabetes for a few years and is really miserable with it.  We never thought that there was a thing he could do about it but now....wow, he may actually be able to cure it!!!  I CANNOT believe that this is not discussed more often as a course of action.  People don't even know this is possibe!!!

Anyhoo....now I only need to "keep calm and carry on"

Nathalie

Looking forward to hear other people's story on this!

Topic: My mom needs your help...
My mom has been helping me with each step of this very annoying process. Last Wednesday she accompanied me and my husband to the seminar. After leaving it she has commented several times she wouldn't mind having it done herslef.  However she is unsure if she is able to. That is where you guys come in. My mother is a type 1 Diabetic. She takes insulin with each meal and then again before bed time. Her fear is two fold. 1. If she would be able to have it at all, and 2. if she did, if she would be able to eat enough to maintain her sugars, and if she did get shaky if she would be able to eat enough to stable herself out again.

Does anyone on here have type 1 and be willing to share with me, and her, how you are doing it? Or does anyone know if it is even possible?

Topic: RE: High blood sugar readings 5 years later
Hi!  I had the rny gastric bypass in December, 2003.  I see my pcp every three months and he runs labs each time.  The last 2 visits my Hgb A1C has crept up to 6.1 and 6.3 indicating the recurrence of T2DM.  My T2DM was poorly controlled on massive amounts of medication and a very strict diet ~ 3 oral hyperglycemics, 3 types of insulin, fish oil, lipitor, tricor and niaspan.  Even with all of that medication, I ended up with severe pancreatitis, an 11 day stay in ICU and a total of 16 days in hospital.  That was the clincher for my decision to have the bypass.  This is really frightening. How do you treat T2DM following the GB?  How do you treat hypoglycemic episodes (which I frequently had before my surgery)  My blood glucose levels were erratic and brittle to say the least.  I am almost 9 years post op and this is the first time I have had elevated A1C readings.  My highest wieght preop was 297.  My lowest weight postop was 193 and I stay right at 212-213 currently.

Thanks,   Carol

Nope, no meds. Have been off of them since doing the pre-surgery protein shakes. :)

Normal blood sugars according to the NIH is 70-99. That's why they were trating it when you got to 71...very low end of normal. However, your meter may be reading lower or the lab the hospital used reads lower...so jus****ch it.

Check with your endo and surgeon but one thing, if you are still on meds...call them today.

Good point about dumping - thanks for that pick up.  Howver, the thing that makes it all work is the measured amount of carbohydrate and the body's reaction to processing it.  I am sure, with a little work, you could find a provider who would give you the GTT without the glucose, but with a source of carbs as a substitute.  You might still have a little issue, but likely process it better without it begin straight glucose.  Just my thought.....

Thanks again. I had RNY.  My bloodsugar last night, before dinner was 68, so Im glad it was time to eat anyway!  I didn't check again, knowing that I would come up and this morning, I was 88 when I woke up, so now that I can eat some things, I know I'll most likely stay in the proper range :)  If my lows do continue, I will call the doctor.

Thanks so much for the help! It is nice to have people "on call" to answer questions, since so many have been where I am now :)

Have a great Monday!
