Topic: RE: HGBA1C postpones surgery?!

My first scheduled surgery was canceled due to my A1c being 11.5. Surgeon said I had to bring it down under 10 in order to be rescheduled. That was in April. I had labs drawn a couple weeks ago and it was down to 7.6. I have worked my tail off, made sure I took every dose of insulin (I was lax before because it makes it so much harder to lose weight) and walked, walked walked. We will heal much quicker if our A1c is in control.

Topic: RE: HELP!!! Carb Confused!!!

I am T2D, diagnosed 1998. Before pre-op I was on insulin Lantus and Novolog. Insulin wasn't helping much and my blood sugars were always high. My last AIC was 9.0, which is the highest I've ever seen. I follow up with my physician to have another test next week, but I know it will be amazing. My blood sugars have been coming down since preop started 04.03.13. My blood sugars now are usually around 90 and I take no meds except my thyroid meds.

Topic: RE: NIPHS~ Non-Insulinoma Pancreatogenous Hypoglycemia Syndrome AFTER RNY

HELP!!  My daughter had gastric by-pass 8 months ago to correct severe gastroparesis.  In April she had her first seizure, passing out, losing memory, etc.  It took days for her to get back all the memory she lost.  Then in a few weeks, she started having more and more symptoms with these seizures in addition to memory loss - rigidity of her body, convulsing while passed out, terrible headaches, sensitivity to light and sound, going from being extremely hot to extremely cold, inability to speak, hands and feet drawing into fetal position and wetting herself.  She also has extreme spikes in blood sugars.  I have taken her to hospital ER's from right around us all the way to the best in the state - The Medical University of South Carolina and they can't find the problem and end up telling me it's psychiatric.  So I carried her to Charlotte, NC to the Carolinas Medical Center and they also said they couldn't find the problem.  The doctor that did the gastric bypass on her has basically washed his hands of her saying he's never heard of any other patient with this problem and he's done 1000's of these surgeries.  When I have tried to get him to look at the data I have found while researching, he refuses, saying data found on the internet is unreliable.  I too found the information put out by Mayo Clinic identifying this problem.  Can you please give me the name of a doctor at the Mayo Clinic that you saw and which location?  I live closest to the Florida clinic, but will travel anywhere necessary to find someone with knowledge of how to treat this.  Also where is the Wonderful Endo you found?  Please, please, help us.  This has disabled her completely!  My e-mail address is [email protected].

Topic: RE: Blood Sugar Crash on the Liver Diet

When I was on the liquid diet I did not have many carbs at all.   I cut way back on my insulin.  I worked very closely with my endo at this time and all the way thru the first 2 months after surgery.   She could almost pin point how much I would need.  Always good to be going to a good endo.

Hi All,

I think it really depends on the surgeon. My A1C was 10.3 on April 9th of this year. I did switch from Lantus twice a day to Novalog 70/30 twice a day at that point. But it has not postponed my surgery. Since starting my liquid diet though my blood sugar have been a lot better.  Like everyone else, I am so done with being a diabetic. It was the main reason I decided to do this in the first place.

Hope that helps.

Topic: Blood Sugar Crash on the Liver Diet

Yesterday was my first day on the full liquids only of the liver diet. All went well until about 1:30 this morning when I woke up in a cold sweat and as hungry as a bear. I my blood sugar was 58 at the time, so I ate two spoon fulls of peanut butter and went back to bed.

Today I have decided to cut back on my insulin and check my levels more often. I am hoping that it wont happen again because I'd really hate for it to hinder my diet.

Did anyone else experience some similar issues or have any advice?

Topic: NSV - morning b/s reading of 89!

Good morning -- I got my sleeve exactly 4 weeks ago.  At the time I was taking 2000 mg of Metformin and 10 mcg of Byetta 2x/day.  My doctor had me stop all diabetes meds the day after surgery.  I've been checking my blood sugars a couple times a day since then and they have continued go down, down, down.

This morning I got up and checked my sugar and it was 89!!!  Do you know the last time I had a morning b/s of 89 without medication?  The twelfth of never, that's when!  Perhaps when I was a kid but it sure hasn't been my reality for at least the last 10 years.

Don't let anyone tell you that the VSG doesn't help with Type II diabetes.  It does!

I take Victoza and Glucophage to lower my sugar and A1C with not a lot of success.

Once I cut out the "white" stuff (sugar, flour, potatoes, etc) mine went down a lot. Started drinking 2 proteins shakes a day and was able to keep it down. My surgery is scheduled for July 12th.

Good Luck to you!!!!!
