I hope you have researched the DS as an option and not just the RNY, as the DS has the highest rate of type 2 diabetes resolution of any WLS currently performed in the US.

As for the meds, some diabetes meds can help you lose weight (for example, metformin and Byetta). Others cause some weight gain. I don't think that particular aspect is any sort of conspiracy - just a crappy side effect! But, hopefully, you will be off the diabetes meds after your surgery anyway!

I get you. Check in with your surgeon's nurse and ask her to note on your chart that you are starting this new med and you are concerned about gaining back what you have lost. ask her to document your current weight and the date you start the glucotol so if you gain everyone will know why.I think you can overcome this just hang in there! Good luck!

I don't see my PCP until June 16 so I won't know yet.  I have not been on any medication since my surgery 1/21/2009 so I am hoping by June, I will be down about 50-60 pounds so we shall see.   I really hope I don't have to go back on meds.  My advise is to call your doc.  Your sugars sound great.   There are no sugar free protein shakes that I know of and some have alot of sugars... look at your labels.   I had to look at quite a few before I found one that was low in sugar - again not sugar free!  I was using the carnation - no sugar added - but the milk was the killer on that one!  Keep me posted.

Topic: new to this board...a little preop vent
I posted this on the main board not realizing there was this forum. Here's my rant and a little extra.

So as some of you know I've been on the fence about surgery...falling into the insurances' trap it seems. Well last week I had another reason to have the surgery. My prediabetic self is most likely officially diabetic. Got a new med added to my med ****tail and I hear it can make you gain weight...at least that's what the doc said. It's glucotrol XL. so yeah...I've lost 15lbs during my supervised weight loss and now with only like a month or so to go, just waiting on the cpap crap, I may actually gain weight back. not only does this upset me because of my weight loss, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of the med? I mean is it the drug company's way of keeping you drug dependent? if you're overweight you can develop diabetes. I'm overweight and this is what happened. I'm trying to do something to change it, but needed a little help med wise and now this pill that's supposed to help could reverse the work I've put in and make me gain weight whi*****reases your diabetes problems?

am I the only one that sees this? ugh!

So diabetes wise I am on metformin 1000mgs and now the glucotrol xl 5mgs. I'm also on a whole list of other meds for mental stuff and heart stuff. some of which also increase blood sugar levels. I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle here.

Hi mom4st8, thanks for posting, I was wondering how you made out with your PCP?  My doc told me to take Lantus 10 units 2x a day but I'm scared too because when I test my sugars they are all like 100, 107, 111.  I'm going to call her on Monday to make sure this is okay or if she wants me to take the Lantus anyway.  I just don't want to bottom out, ya know?  How 'bout you, still off meds?

Hi all.  I also have had Type II for 6 years now, I have only taken Metformin 500 mg twice a day.  Right after surgery I stopped my metformin medication. After a month or so it started to climb back up so I put myself back on. ON the next trip to my primary I told her and she has done blood work and agrees that while my B.S. is well controlled it may never go away...a disappointment for me. But at least I am off my B.P. meds for good now!

100% unsweetened fruit juice works perfectly, and no dumping if no added sugar.  I'm diabetic and had to do this right out of surgery.  I do dump with sugar/white carbs, but not with fruit juice.

I was (am) type 2.  I was on Gliprimide once a day and nothing else before sugury.   I did not have to do liquid pre-op but was on liquids only post op for 3 weeks.  I was given insulin in the hospital but sent home on nothing.   I started on no sugar added carnation instant breakfast (never found the sugar free version) but sugars were in the 180's.  So I tried to switch to Glucerna protein - but they gagged me.  I found EAS Myoplex Original Protein drinks (42 grams of protein, 2 grams of sugars, and 19 carbs)  Carbs not so great, but sugars like this drink the best.  Sugars are in the 120's now (3 months out) and I will see PCP next month for another AIC.  She said she will decide then if meds are needed, but she is thinking not.  My AIC at 3 weeks was around 7.  Good Luck with your sugery.   I love my RNY!!!!

Topic: RE: If you are Type 2 and considering WLS...
I finally had my DS on March 27. Currently, my glucose readings throughout the day are well within a normal range (around 90 to a high of maybe 130 after meal). My fasting numbers are still high but are coming down. When I forst came home, my fastings were in the 150-170 range, but they are now as low as 115. I am on 500mg metformin twice per day (pre-op, I was on a total of 2500mg metformin and 50 Januvia, and my readings were still all too high), and my PCP and bariatric nurse are confident I will soon be off even that.
