I had the band for 5 years before I had it removed and I had always chewed it in half (ugh). I was told to do so. I swallowed with water quickly. I want to have the surgery soon b/c my A1C is at a 9 too. I was told that RNY may help better in resolving or lowering it. I'm a light weight and very afraid to have RNY, but I gotta do what I gotta do. You're in my prayers and keep me in yours too! We're in a win-lose LOSE situation
I don't have an answer but I wanted to know the same thing. I am having problems with pain in my feet especially upon standing on them in the A.M. I am considered a light weight but will get the surgery in hopes of it helping me with my diabetes. I take metformin as well. @ Katherine, I would love to get as much info as possible.
I know it's been a while since you posted this, but have you gotten things figured out?

Have you looked in to the Healthy Kids program here in OR? Also, check with Bi-Mart pharmacy. They have a prescription insurance program that is free and they can sometimes help that way. I have insurance with a $10.00 co-pay for meds, and they actually run a couple of my meds through their program for me because the meds only cost about $5.00 through that program. It is a great program.
I am 12 weeks out.. I left the hospital with no diabetic MEDS and I went from a 8.2 A1C to a 5.7. My PCP is over the top. I am more than happy with the diabetes results not to mention the 65 lbs lose. I wish I had this op years ago!

I crushed mine for the first two weeks, and then I was allowed to start taking them whole. I take the 500 mg twice a day, so they're not too large.

I had the beginnings of neuropathy in my feet before surgery. It has resolved. I was also on insulin and metformin. I no longer need either. I hope this helps. Feel free to ask anything if I can help.

I bought a pill cutter at Shopper's Drug Mart that works awesome, I cut my Metformin in 2 pieces and take each with a sip of water, I cannot get a pill that big down yet - had my sleeve done Oct 31st.
How are your sugars now? Have they settled back down?
