Topic: RE: Who left hospital with NO diabetes post RNY
i have been a diabetic for 15 years and on insulin the last 12. I had been taking insulin that is 5 times stronger than regular-U500 insulin and I was taking 80units a day that is equal to 400units of reg insulin. I left the hospital without any diabetes meds. Then after a month BS in the AM increased and doc told me to go on regular insulin. 5 units AM and PM. Then doc took me off of insulin completely after 3 months and put me on 2 oral diabetic meds. But Metformin gave me terrieble diarrhea, so I got off of that and now and just taking one oral medicene and my sugars are staying under 160 most of the time. I really have to watch the carbs! But I am now 72lbs off and feel like a new person! I kid you not! I am off of BP meds, cholestrol meds, asthma meds. I was on 12 meds and now take 4. But the wonderful thing is how energetic I feel! The diabetes made me so tired and I have pinched nerves in my back and neck from bone spurs and could not walk -had to ride a cart or wheel chair most of the time. Now I have very little pain and I feel like I have rolled 15 years off- I would do it again in a heartbeat. IT is still a lot of work, you are still hungry and you can mess it up if you don't follow drs orders but you have this wonderful tool that is there to help you and keep you strong. I LOVE MY RNY!

Please see the studies and articles in my profile, all relating to WLS for type 2 diabetes.
I've also tried to keep a running thread here on the diabetes board; here is a link:

Topic: RE: Feeling awful--Dr. just doubled my insulin--
I know what your sayin by feelin crabby, i was taking a combo of 60-62 units 4 times a day. drinking lots of water helps and walking. But too much walking can lead to a low so take a little less long acting. hope that helps
Topic: RE: Question about blood sugar and TOM
I grew up with diabetics and now am one going on 8 yrs now...TOM isnt the only trigger to ups and downs in sugar levels. anything from pain to change in weather temp can affect levels. Some diabetics can maintain their levels while others are more unpredictable, making it a constant struggle.

I had open RNY on 5-5 and have not been on my meds for diabetes since. My BS lastnight was 79 and 58 this am. I am hoping to not have to go back on any meds for it or the HBP. I guess time will really tell if it is in remission.

Is it your long acting insulin that was doubled? You might try breaking up the long acting insulin to twice a day so that you won't get so low. That is what I do and it works for me. Also, try small meals six times a day. Hope that helps.
Topic: RE: hypoglycemia
Hi, I'm on 100 units of novolog 70/30 a day. I haven't had surgery yet but I'm wondering if I'll still be able to take that much after surgery since I won't be able to eat much. Hypoglcemia is a big concern for me after the surgery as I occasionally suffer from it now and I can eat, what happens when I cannot?

I just started liquid protein diet today, surgery is in 2 weeks. I bought Bariatric Advantage from my surgeon's office, but you can buy it online. It's a meal replacement shake that has only 1 g of sugar, 135 calories, 27 g of protein and 135 calories per serving. I'm supposed to have 4-5 servings per day. I'm rather hungry though!

Is it causing you to have lows? I would be testing MANY times a day if my insulin were just doubled - that's a big change.

For my liquid diet stage, I had the Sugar Free Carnation Instant Breakfast 3-5 times a day. S/F jello's, S/F popsicles, S/F fudgsicles, broth (but couldn't drink that) tried it and dumped it out! Gross!!! I had to be on the liquid diet stage for 2 loonnng weeekkkks! I did have tomato soup twice, til the dr's office said no more. I did snack a small piece of deli turkey at night, otherwise I don't think I would of made it cause I was starving!!!!! I made it to surgery down 13lbs. and now I am almost 5 months post-op. Good luck to you.
