Topic: RE: Help!! 20 days out--sugars creeping back up!!!!
Sherri,
I realize this post is from several months ago, but I felt compelled to reply. I had surgery just over three years ago and now have a BMI of just at 25, or normal, basically. I had very complicated insulin resistant diabetes pre-surgery and was on 100 units of insulin a day but it was far from under control. I had the surgery in part to hopefully throw my diabetes into resolution. And I did, for about two years. I had great A1c levels, anywhere from 5-7, without any insulin or medication.
For the last 6 months or so, I have recognized the symptoms and went into serious denial. No appetite, losing a little more weight, nauseua, thirst, on and on. I knew it was my sugars, but I did not want to believe it. I would schedule and cancel dr, appts right and left. I finally had one scheduled for this past Thursday, so Tuesday night I bit the bullet and checked my sugar - it was 583. Who knows how long I have been in such bad shape.
My doctor knows me all too well, and while the number upset him, he was not shocked at my behavior. He has put me on Levemir, 55 units at night, and then Starlix at every meal. Starlix is supposed to be advantageous because you take it right as you eat so it is apparently more flexible.
My issues are dealing with the emotional aspects of having the diabetes return and fear of gaining my weight back, which is what insulin always made me do in the past. My pancreas has pretty much shut down, and so this will be a lifetime regime. I am angry and sad. But I am here trying to find out how others deal, so that is a good sign, I guess.
Thanks for telling your story. It did make me realize that I am so much healthier in other ways because of the surgery, and this is something that can be managed.

I started on Glucotrol XL 5mg 11 years ago. I stayed the same did not gain weight. I gained a lot of weight when I went on Lantus and Novolog. I ballooned 20 pounds in 12 weeks. I am still trying to loose those damn 20 pounds.
Document when you started taking this new med. There is Amaryl which is good. Also you can take Glucophage excellent med but if you cannot tolerate may god help you.

I love Byetta. I lost 10 pounds.
The way I see it most likely I will stop using insulin and maybe just a pill. I will never have the potential of being in remission or being backround diabetic if I don't get the WLS.

It depends on the person, how long they have been diabetic, their family history, their eating after surgery, their exercise, their stress level and probably just the diabetes fairy deciding whether or not to go away.
I had RNY, but if I knew what I do now, I would have had the switch. I wanted the best shot at getting rid of diabetes and the statistics are better for the switch.

Topic: RE: Must have an A1C of 7.0 or less for surgery
I think they are just worried about the risk of infection with the high blood sugars. My surgeon would not operate unless I was under 7. High sugars make it harder to heal and more likely to get infections.
Sounds like you are doing fine and you should have the levels down quickly. It is best to reduce risk as much as possible.

Topic: RE: Need help for daughter
I was 23 when diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. I was young and thought I knew better than anyone else.
You can tell her this: if she does not loose weight her diabetes will get worse, if it gets worse it will be harder for her to get pregnant, if it gets worse and gets pregnant it can become very dangerous for her and the baby while pregnant, she can have kidney failure while pregnant. This scenario is only for pregnancy.
If diabetes is not treated she can suffer from heart failure. Women that are diabetic suffer from silent heart attack they dont even know that they are having one. If diabetis is not properlly maintained she can have a heart attack have stents put in every 3 months and not be able to have children because no doctor will touch her. And if that was not enought her arteries can start getting smaller making it harder to get stents put in. God forbid that were to happen because then she would have a bypass.
This is my story. I am 35 years old. First heart attack was at 34. I just felt some pain in arm as if I was lifting weights. I was lucky enough to have one child. I almost went into kidney failure while pregnant. Years later when I met the love of my life and I wanted to have children with him. I am not allowed. Later I started having problems with my heart. I have 3 stents, if my arteries get smaller I will have a bypass. I am racing with time that I can get my VSG done before I have some other heart issue. Right now all is good. Doctors wont even talk to me about WLS in the US because of my heart.
I hope that when you tell your daughter this it will get her thinking about her health habits. I wish I would have listend to my doctors and parents but they were not my age and therefore assumed they knew nothing.
