Topic: Am I hypoglycemic???
I hope some of you can help me. I've been having episodes that I thought may have been caused by my blood pressure meds. Usually when it happens I'm not at home, but yesterday I was. I started shaking, feeling really weak, jittery and nervous, just basically felt like I was going to come right out of my skin and pass out. My husband is diabetic and told me to check my blood sugar with his monitor so I did and it was 64. I was fixing lunch when it happened and he told me to just hurry up and eat some mashed potatoes. I did and about 15 minutes later I started slowly feeling better. One of my points is this...am I also confusing what I think is dumping syndrome with symptoms of low or high blood sugar? Sometimes after I eat my heart races and I get really nervous and hot in my face. So is that dumping or is my sugar spiking? I'm so confused right now. I've had symptoms of low blood sugar for a long time but in the past everytime I've ever checked it my sugar has been perfect. I would really appreciate any info that any of you can give me. I need all the help I can get right now. I do know a lot about type 2 diabetes because of my husband and I've been to diabetic nutrition classes with him, but neither of us know anything about low sugar and rny gastric bypass.

Hello,
I was having low blood sugar episodes pretty regularly for about 3 weeks. Then all of a sudden it just got better. I wasn't able to determine if it was the food I was eating or exercise or what. My support group leader is a registered dietician and I spoke to her about it. It sounds like it's pretty normal for RNY patients to have these problems at 9-12 months out from surgery. I was almost exactly 12 months out when it started for me. I am still going to talk to my doctor about it tho because it still happens occasionally.
I walk for 20 minutes every day on my lunch break. It feels good to get out and move. I'm glad you're doing okay and getting your exercise.
Take care,
Tammy

This is why I hate that so many doctors, nutritionists, and even the ADA are NOT willing to amit a LOW CARB diet is the best prescription for type 2 diabetes. I lowered my A1C from 9.5 to 6.2 in 3 months and cut my triglycerides by more than half by sticking to a low carb, higher protein and fat diet.

I've recently developed low blood sugar issues and would appreciate any suggestions or ideas on coping.
before sugery i had minor issues now and then.
now that i'm 5 years out i've developed not fun issues! i hate to say major cause they are minor compared to full blown diabeties but i am working very hard to keep them minor.
i have to eat every 2 to 3 hours or i get all those yucky symptoms.
i'll do great for a few weeks and get over confident go to dinner with friends and end up eating something simple like a tablspoon of regular salad dressing and be messed up for a week or more after.
is this normal?
or is this my normal now?
argggg
thank you and god bless, pam

Hi Tammy, I was wondering how you have been doing with your low blood sugar problems.
My has been good for a while but if I go off of my program than I will have issues.
Going off my program can be as simple as trying something new for breakfast like kashi cereal. Who knew the honey on it could set me off? now its back to the drawing board to get back to normal.
this sure has been a learning experience. One I would rather have done without but I can not complain at least it can be manageable.
I've had a hard time getting back to excersing regularly. Its a constant push to get me out the door. Honestly I like it when it rains cause it gives me an excuse not to walk! but that has to stop! I need to walk at least 15 minutes a day. Thats not much to ask right? argggggg
I'm off for my walk right now.
Good luck and god bless, pam

Ashley, your doctor will refer you to a WL surgeon, who will require you to see a nutritionist. They will give you all the information about diet, vitamins, etc. Your surgeon will give you specific information on vitamins and protein requirements, depending on your surgery. You will have lots of support, information and resources. You may even have to go to a class, or seminar first.
The surgeon recommended gastric bypass for my daughter because she has diabetes. Band weight loss is very slow. Bypass eliminates the part of the digestive track that processed sugar, which really helps diabetics. You can't process it so it makes you "dump", which my daughter counted on to keep her on track. It causes you to avoid sugars and white carbs - a good thing.
(my daughter went in for band, but changed the plan).
Your diabetes doctor will give you an insulin plan for the days before surgery and afterwards. Lows were corrected easily with %100 pure (no sugar added) fruit juice. Very little, if any, insulin is needed as you are pretty much fasting. You add insulin as you add food.
Protein drinks are easy: divide up as you can only obsorb 30 grams max of protein at one time.
It would all depend upon your type of surgery.
You won't have to figure any of this out yourself. It is all presented to you, and supported along the way. You will have your surgeon, a nutritionist, and your diabetes doctor. Hope this reassures you. Glad to help. Best wishes

I crave carbs and I know that's always been my problem...reaching for carbs first. Now that I'm off of Actos and am eating nearly no bread products at all, I've lost nearly 15 lbs. Low low carbs and the weight loss has already made a difference in my sugar levels. My daughter moved out last month so I only have to shop for myself and I'm not buying anything that I can't have. I'm worried about post op meds. I take several other meds in addition to diabetic meds and I'm worried I'm going to get all out of wack. The insulin you only take at night is Lantus. It is much better , IMO, than taking the fast acting insulin before each meal. I'm just worried about adjusting it after surgery.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT. ISNT IT BETTER TO DO THE LAPBEND TO NOT HAVE SO MANY COMPLICATIONS AFTERWARDS. WHO ADJUSTS HER INSULINE LEVELS AFTER SURGERY? HOW WOULD I KNOW HOW MUCH INSULINE TO TAKE AFTER THE SURGERY. CAN YOU RECOMMEND ME A DIETICIAN WHO WOULD TELL ME HOW TO TAKE THE PROTEIN DRINKS WHAT TO EAT AFTER THE SURGERY OR THE LAPBEND. I AM GOING TO GO TO SEE MY PRIMARY DOCTOR TOMORROW FOR AN AUTHORIZATION FOR THE PROCEDURE TOMORROW.

You go girl!!! I had my surgery May 5 and I am having a horrible time with my blood sugar. I am taking insulin on a sliding scale, post op. Was taking 2000mg metformin, 45 Actos and 20 glyburide preop. The only reason I wasn't on insulin is my PCP wanted to see if I got the surgery first. And my checks weren't that good then but they are still as bad if not worse at times. Starting tommorrow I am to stop the metformin (1000mg) again and she is giving me a insulin that I only take at night, can't remember the name, supposedly a 24 hr. insulin. Anyway I am babbling, wish you all the best.
