Topic: help, pancreatitus and low blood sugar
Ive been put in the hospital 1 time a month for the last 3 months for pancreatitus. They have done several test. They thought I needed a pace maker. My heart rate is around 47 during the day and 37 at night. I have a hiatus hernia that is big on the ct and small when they do a endo scope. For months I have been seeing spots, getting shakey and now I find out my sugar has been going down to about 37. I have pancreatitus attacks almost everyday that feel like gall bladder attacks.
Has anyone had any symptoms like these? Im thinking that my pancreatitus is related to my low blood sugar.

That is awesome!!!!  Good for you and good luck in continued success in that area!!  I am off my Januvia, and went to regular metfromin vs. metformin ER and a smaller does as well.

Now if I could just figure out how to swallow that dang metformin.  That pill even in the non ER formula is huge!!!  And I have tried cutting them in quarterts to boot.  I have to admit, I ahve been very bad in the taking of the big meds.....and I really need to work on that.

I too was hoping to be off all my diabetes meds by now, but they certainly have decreased....at least amount wise!!!   If only now I could take them!!!
On the road to a whole new me and a  shopping spree!!!

I understand that that may happen.  I've decided to go with Lantus only in that case.  I think it will eventually work itself out in the long term as the weight goes down.  I'm hoping anyway.  Presurgery my numbers were really really good and I wasn't on a liquid diet - just 1200 cal, low carb.  Thanks for the heads up.  Good luck to you!

I was on Byetta 5 2x per day for over a year...almost 2.  It helped me lose about 25#, however that's all.  My endo just d/c'd it for me because she doesn't think I'm recieving any benefits from it anymore.  I am PCOS w/ severe IR.  She suggested going to the higher dosage, however, I wound up w/ crashing BS and eating everything in site to get it to go up, so I declined.

Good luck to you though!

An article about the Buchwald meta-analysis (the bold red part shows that at 2+ years post-op, RNY about 10% of patients who saw their diabetes resolved early post-op had RECURRENCE of their diabetes, while those with the DS actually had MORE cases of resolved diabetes at 2+ years post-op):

Potential For Resolving Type 2 Diabetes With Bariatric Surgery

ScienceDaily (Mar. 11, 2009) — As the incidence of obesity-induced type 2 diabetes mellitus continues to increase worldwide, medical research indicates that surgery to reduce obesity can completely eliminate all manifestations of diabetes.

In a study published in the March 2009 issue of The American Journal of Medicine, investigators analyzed 621 studies from 1990 to April of 2006, which showed that 78.1% of diabetic patients had complete resolution and diabetes was improved or resolved in 86.6% of patients as the result of bariatric surgery. The primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes is obesity, and 90% of all patients with type 2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

The dataset included 135,246 patients where 3188 patients reported resolution of the clinical and laboratory manifestations of type 2 diabetes. Nineteen studies with 11,175 patients reported both weight loss and diabetes resolution outcomes separately for the 4070 diabetic patients in those studies. Clinical findings were substantiated by the laboratory parameters of serum insulin, HbA1c, and glucose.

Researchers observed a progressive relationship of diabetes resolution and weight loss as a function of the operation performed: laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, gastroplasty, gastric bypass, and biliopancreatic diversion/duodenal switch (BPD/DS). Gastric banding yielded 56.7% resolution, gastroplasty 79.7%, gastric bypass 80.3% and BPD/DS 95.1%. After more than 2 year post-operative, the corresponding resolutions were 58.3%, 77.5%, 70.9%, and 95.9%. In addition, the percent excess weight loss was 46.2%, 55.5%, 59.7% and 63.6%, for the type of surgery performed, respectively.

Writing in the article, Henry Buchwald, MD, PhD, Department of Surgery, University of Minnesota, states, "This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate that bariatric surgery has a powerful treatment effect in morbidly obese persons with type 2 diabetes; 82% of patients had resolution of the clinical and laboratory manifestations of diabetes in the first 2 years after surgery, and 62% remained free of diabetes more than 2 years after surgery (80% and 75% for the total group). Randomized clinical trials comparing surgery and medical therapies for type 2 diabetes are urgently needed. Considering the potential benefits for millions of people, such trials should assess the risk/benefit ratio of surgery in less obese (BMI 30-35 kg/m2) populations, as well as in the morbidly obese (BMI>35 kg/m2) population."

i don't want to burst your bubble because I know how good it felt to get rid of my insulin pump and off Glucovance after one week of surgery BUT, my blood sugars crept right back up after a couple of weeks...about the time I started eating soft foods. The endo put me on Januvia and it didn't do anything so now they have me trying Amaryl. I pray your levels stay fabulous but just keep testing!

My pancreas has been spitting out too much insulin for years so I'm used to the high protein - low carb management of my blood sugar.  It's just nice not to have everyone I work with jumping down my throat if I reach for a thin slice of birthday cake and shouting "You can't have that - you're diabetic!"

Glucose level under 117 since home from surgery.  No novalog.  No lantus.  No metformin.  No actos.  None.  Off all diabetes meds and have a normal glucose reading.  Wow.  Cut all but 3 of 15 meds already!  Only need one blood pressure pill, thyroid pill, and one anti-anxiety pill.  This is the reason I finally had the surgery.  I am soooo happy.  Surgery went great.  Hardly any pain.  I feel great..

Thank you Mishelle.  I'm hoping it will improve my kidney function.  I'll ask my dr. for more info when I see him on July 21.

i asked my surgeon what type of damage can i possibly be doing to my kidneys with massive weight loss, and eating all the higher protien diets.

He said that folks that are about to head to dialysis can have the surgery - and then actually have improved kidney function.

With the weight loss you will no longer be putting weight and pressure on the kidneys - so they will be better.

I thought that "filtering" the fat and waste that it could potentially harm my kidneys and he said no.

Did you ask your doctor?  that would be my suggestion.
