Topic: RE: Surgery July 14 - Diabetes controlled with no meds
Congrats on your glucose readings. The same thing happened to me. I stopped taking my diabetes meds during my liquid diet because my readings were no higher than 140. Since surgery my levels have been between 90 - 108. My doctor said to keep testing and as long as it stays low I will not need any diabetes meds. My blood pressure did the same. It averages 115/72. SO am off all of my meds unless these counts change as well. As for my cholesterol meds, I am off of them too but only a blood test will tell if I need them. So the doctor said we will test in October and then make a decision.
It is exciting not to need anything now even if our body adjusts to our new life style and we need to take meds later we will still have our new body!

Topic: RE: Am I hypoglycemic???
You two have described me to a "T"! I thought I was going insane. My doctor dosent understand what is going on and I have been testing my blood and he is sending me for tests. My sugar one night was 32! After going to bed and it being normal. I don't even remember parts of that episode. If my husband didn't wake me up, I might have been in a sugar induced coma! I now have something for my doctor to go on and I am going to do research myself right now! Thank you both!
Topic: RE: Low Blood Sugar symptoms
OMG! I have been having such problems with my sugar and it seems to have started 6 months ago. I will have a reading of 80 something I will eat and then it must spike and all of a sudden I plumet to 32 and get shakey, dizzy confused sweaty and I have my doctor baffeled. I tried to tell him or should I say ask him if it could be bypass related, and he wasn't sure. I have gained weight too! This helped me a bit, I think I am going to just go back to basics and see what happens, use the Time out diet for us bypass patients and go from there. Thank you!
Topic: RE: 3 months after surgery...
That is great!! I was disappointed after surgery that my diabetes was not resolved and I went home taking metformin also. I am happy to tell you that as of last week, I am completely off of all medication with very normal blood sugars.
It wont be long for you also

Topic: low blood sugar of 69 post op
Good morning. I had my rny on Tuesday July 28th, I had seen my family dr who said to stop my byetta after surgery, to stop my atenol that day, reduce my furesomide in half and keep my lisnopril the same. Well after the surgery there internist dr who I never saw before came up to see me and tells me I have to continue with the byetta and atenol post op. I told him my dr already gave me instructions for discharge. Well he said no while you are here you will take your byetta and if your blood sugar gets to high we will give you insulin. Well it didn't get to high most days it was in the 90's and had one in the 150's. On the discharge papers he put to continue the byetta and all blood presssure med. I argue with this guy on the last day. and he said follow up with your regular dr he just confused more since I already had my stuff all written down and also had type them a list with all meds and all changes to take effect after surgery. Gave them the type copy so there were no questions. i am so upset wit h this doctor. Well i have not taken the byetta or the atenol. And I continue with the furseomide at half of the dose. He want me to stop that. I had such bad edmea once I took it was gone by night. I haven't took byetta. He tells me you can't get low blood sugars from byetta. But seems I got it from the surgery. And haven't had any byetta since I left the hospital. Today is first time I took my blood sugar I know the last 2 days were bad headaches which is a sign that my sugar is low. ON top of that he want to stop taking my bariartric advantage or celebrate vitimans. They want me to take a centrum or flinstone with iron in it. Sorry guys I taking something that i know is good for me. Where are they getting these quacks from. oh yea he told me to stop taking my biotin!!!! What are you nuts! My biotin is to help with hair loss and nails. I lost hair pre surgery and my surgeon recommend it. And now he is telling me to stop it. I really notice the hair on my bed there look like I shedded like a dog. I am not stopping my byetta. I am going to follow my dr orders and not these quacks. Just my surgeon, family dr and dietician. Not someone that sees me in the hospital who don't know me. They should of just called my family dr to talk to her about my care after discharge.
Is it normal to have this type of low sugars after surgery. My pre op testing my a1 c was 5.6 is why my dr stop the byetta after surgery and my fasting was 93. I had lost 50 lbs pre surgery in 6 months time.

Topic: RE: Has anyone ever had Cortisone Shot?
The cortisone shots will definitely make your sugars higher but should resolve and start to come back down in a couple of days. As you said, they are better now. If you plan to have any more injections you might want to make sure the doctor knows that you are diabetic and make adjustments to your medications to cover these high blood sugars.

I wasn't trying to argue that. I was just stating what was true for me.

No one said the RNY could never work, just that the DS works more often, for more people, and for a longer period of time.
Topic: RE: Insulin Resitance help available...
Hopefully you will find that you only need to eat a little protein and carb before you work out. The book is a good program for any dieter but it speaks to IR persons directly....I hope the book gives you the answers you are looking for. It answers all our questions about metabolism that we never knew.....a terrific education. I wish I had known this stuff before surgery, although I would have had the RNY anyway. It is a wonderful tool for portion control and commitment is a must!. Best wishes!!!

Kim,
Thanks for the recommendation. I just looked up the website and read the blurb on the home page. Sounds like me. For the past 4 years I have been watching my diet, working out at least 4 days a week for an hour and have had a very hard time getting the scale to move. Over this time I also had increases in my A1C and Dr added byetta and glyburide to my metformin. I had RNY just over two weeks ago. They gave me insulin (had never had this before) after surgery every 4 hours. Finally after 1 1/2 days by blood sugar came down below 150. I came home with a prescription for liquid metformin and don't have to take the other 2 drugs. Since my BS was staying below 150, I was hoping my PCP would say I didn't need the metformin either. No luck. She wants me to continue it. This past week I've been getting back to the gym and walking on the treadmill for 45 min. I test my BS when I get back home and it's running 155 - 168. Then comes down to about 100 over the next 1 - 2 hours.
This book sounds like it would be good for me to read.
