You can indeed have carb withdrawal, and it isn't pretty. But if you're aware of it, it's somewhat easier to handle.
Stay away from grain-based carbs, they tend to incite carb cravings, IMHO. Try instead to get carbs only from lo-carb fruits like berries and melons--they have a high water content to calorie ratio, so they also help fill you up.
Get some real protein shakes, because 18 carbs per serving is too high. Champion Whey Stack is fabulous, and has 4 carbs/serving. Plus all the protein will help your body build up protein reserves and help with healing, post-op. VitaLady sells single-serv samples of lots of shakes, I'd suggest getting several from her so you don't get stuck with a bunch of shakes you don't like. I think you can get the 2lb tubs of Champion Whey from the Vitamin Shoppe, but I'm not sure.
Instead of carbs, you're going to have to substitute protein. I did a low-carb diet pre-op, and did not worry in the slightest about the fat content of protein--and I lost 17 lbs. doing that. The fat will help keep you full and keep you from reaching for the carbs.
Good luck!

Topic: wt loss stopped when Actos dc'd?
I'm almost 7 mths post RNY and have lost 115#. Prior to surgery I was taking the max amount of Actos and metaglip and my BS's were still very unstable. At 5.5 mths my A1C was 5 and all my meds were dc'd. Since then, I have not lost any weight and I am getting very discouraged. I'm doing everything I know to do--exercising even more, eating very well, getting all my protein and water in, keeping my carbs down-- but I just cannot break this stall. I still need to lose 80#. I feel great physically and I know that stalls are inevitable but this one is esp. long and I'm afraid it will never break. I wonder if there is some correlation with the discontinuation of my diabetic meds. Has anyone else ever experienced this?
Topic: Pre-op Diet Carb Restriction..
My surgery date is 9-14-09
I am currently on my 2 week low carb diet for "liver shrinking" and I am finding it very hard to find things to eat.. My doctor only allows me to have 25-30 grams of carb daily!! I had pork rinds and vienna sausages for lunch today, is it possible to have carb withdrawal? I have been in an awful mood and almost tackled a lady at the local pizza place when I went to p/u my salad for dinner!!
Breakfast I have been having SF Carnation Instant Breakfast (18 carbs) thats almost my whole day.. Just looking for some advice from all of those who have been there before or may be going through the same thing now...

Topic: RE: ? i have diabetes should i????
I have diabetes and have been labeled a type 2. I am on an insulin pump and using Humilin R U-500. I had laproscopic RNY 9 days ago - i have had a few high sugars since the surgery, bt have been running around 95-107 BS on an average. I have lowered my basal rate to .50 units an hour from 3 units/hour. I hav had 7 lows at night from 42-30BS, this has scared me - I used to know what to do to raise the sugar but now i am in a lost - i am only having 8 oz. water per hour sipping now. I used to raise it with juice then followed by a protein, now I can't hold that much. I have tried the glucose pills but can't handle more than 2 - what I did the other night was someting I don't really like doing but I did - ate a babby spoon of icing and followed with some protein shake. and removed my pump.
I guess what i am asking is for some ideas you use to treat low blodd sugars.
Is there any other fellow pumps who have had WLS out there? Livestrong's Daily

Can't speak on behalf of the program you are worried about. This is whatyou should do.
GET YOUR ENDO or PCP write up a surgical plan to handle your diabetes. if your on insulin, have a scale written for corrections figured out before hand. if your on the insulin pump, have your doctor write orders NOT to remove your pump.
I was in control of monitoring my diabetes and corrections once I was "awake" and things worked out just fine. Good luck

Atkins really isn't the best idea for a type 1 diabetic that has had diabetes for so long. Becuase chances are your kidneys are already compromised from all the years of being over weight and diabetic. The higher protein can put additional strain on your kidneys that may not be healthy for you.
If this is what you are going to do, I would highly recommend that the protien choices you make are very lean and healthy. Have a 24 hour collection done while on the diet to make sure that your kidneys are functioning properly in order to continue. Just would caution you.
I've had diabetes for 24 years since I was 10. My kidneys are so so, but I would not want to compromise them. That was why I also talked to my doctor before I had my RNY about kidney issues. I was very concerned about the higher protien intake required, and also loosing weight so rapidly what would that do to the kidneys.
Good luck - Heard the south beach is a lower carb diet but friendlier to the body than atkins

Are you Type 2 or Type 1? And what are you blood sugars like in general?
Ketones can indicate two types of ketosis--the weight losing kind, which are fine in moderation, and those related to diabetic ketoacidosis, which are serious and should not be ignored. If your blood sugars are fairly close to 150 or less, you've likely got weight-loss ketosis going on. But it you're seeing a lot of blood sugars over 240 plus ketones, I'd certainly be on the phone to my endo.

i too was a type 2 diabetic pt. After losing all the weight I am back to normal. Like dr. sapala said some diabetes are hereditary cases others could be due to overweight and in pregnant woman gestetion diabetes. These concerns you should defenetly discuss with Dr. sapala and your endocrinologist who will probably tell you that having this surgery is beneficial towards your health. Good luck and God bless!!!
