Low sugars were a scare for me. So I increased my pump bg target on my pump.
Milk does help for a low sugar. Just going to have to see what will work afterwards. Glucose tab worked for me as well.
type 1 for 24 years here - pumpin' for 11 years with MM and CGS
Prior to surgery I reduced my basal by 40% before even going in. Then dropped down from 130 units a day to now I use about 40-45 per day. Thats the great thing. But now I have a fridge FULL of insulin no longer needing 4 vials a month of humalog

Hi Melanie,
I plan on getting the sleeve (vertical sleeve gastrectomy) in January. There is no dumping, purely restrictive. Also, the stretchy, ghrelin (hunger producing hormones) producing part of the stomach is removed.
I looked at the band, but I believe it is falling out of favor. RNY is a little scary to me as is the duodenal switch.
My endo said I might not have to bolus anymore after the surgery! Doesn't that sound great!!!

I am on the insulin pump. I have been for 10 years. I have had diabetes for 23 years this month. WOW is all I can say about that. I am approved for surgery but waiting to take my six weeks of classes. When I see the Dr I guess he will decide which surgery is best for me. what is the one you are having? I am bot familer with the terms yet. I am scared about the dumping thing I keep hearing about. If I get low blood sugar I am goon need sugar. It already makes me feel awful. I can't imagine feeling worse. Have a great day. Keep in touch.

I don't know if you have Type 1 or 2 but I am extremely insulin resistant. I have type 1 but many aspects of type 2. I take tons of insulin. I do bottom out sometimes because I have to take so much to keep my blood sugar stable. I use a continuous glucose monitor that helps me know when I am going low or high. I also check my blood sugar constantly so I know how it is. You should see the endo because they experts in diabetes and can help you. Unfortunately PCP's have little knowledge about diabetes. i should say some of them not all of them. I have been dealing with diabetes for 23 years so if you ever need to talk or just ask a question let me know. Hope this helps.

Sorry to hear you to are diabetic, its terrible. You would think after losing so much weight we wouldn't have to worry. I guess not.
Take care of yourself, do what the doctors say and you will be fine,. I know I will.
Be well,

I just found out yesterday that I am diabetic too. I lost almost 200lbs and I am now diabetic...just saying it still does not make it sink in. I knew something was wrong with me. I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and now this since having the surgery. I had surgery in 06. Have done pretty good till the last 2 yrs I would say. I have chronic pain all the time, I stay depressed, I am afraid to drive because I have been losing time and memory due to my blood sugars. I was always told that I was hypoglycemic only to find out that I am diabetic. My dr thinks that instead of having hypoglycemia it was diabetes but previous dr's did not want to check it out because I was young and just swept me under the rug. I know one thing if you think that something is wrong with you no matter what a dr or friend tells you, do not give up till you find out what is wrong with you. I have been swept under the rug so many times I look back and I get furious. And if you dont agree with your dr it is ok to speak up and say so and find a dr that will work with you and not against you. I believe that mine (diabetes) is genetic. or my pancreas just quite working. Who knows why this happens. I guess we have to look at it this way it was caught and now we can face it head on and take care of it before it does major damage and atleast we dont have to fight it being over 300lbs. My heaviest was 330. So with all that being said I hope that you find a dr that will help you and if we stay on top of it it won't win...Good luck to you.

yes my insulin levels are high. i was on metformin for type 2 before surgery but was taken off of it by my surgeon. the only reason we even tested my insulin level was because i started having problems with my PCOS. and i walk at least a mile a day.

How do they know you are insulin resistant if your glucose levels are normal? Do you have higher than normal serum insulin levels? This can be a precursor to type 2 diabetes. Often prescribed for such cases is metformin, as it does not typically cause lows since it does not cause an increase in insulin production. Also, the dirty "e" word (exercise) can be very helpful for insulin resistance.
